New Hyundai Concepts Reveal a Design Path Unknown to Ioniq Until Now

A New Phase for Ioniq

Hyundai is laying the groundwork for the next stage of its Ioniq sub-brand’s development by previewing a pair of new concepts. The electric vehicles, named Earth and Venus, present an evolutionary design language that is likely to carry over to future production models.

Official Announcement and Symbolism

The automaker’s official website in China features a countdown to the “Hyundai Ioniq Brand Launch,” scheduled for April 10. A teaser video shows a meteorite impact that reveals a golden-colored crystal, one facet of which resembles the letter ‘i’. It remains unclear whether this will become the new Ioniq emblem.

Hyundai has also posted cryptic teasers of the upcoming concepts on its global social media, describing them as “a cosmic affirmation created for humanity.”

Earth Concept

The Earth Concept is finished in a silver color and features Y-shaped LEDs reminiscent of the 2019 Lamborghini V12 Vision Gran Turismo concept. Its short hood, steeply raked windshield, squared-off wheel arches, and flat surfaces give it a distinct Cybertruck-like appearance. Unfortunately, only a small portion of the profile is visible, so the overall body type remains unclear.

Venus Concept

The Venus Concept is presented in a gold finish, with the teaser focusing on its rear end. It features sharper and more angular forms combined with a coupe-like roofline, ultra-thin LEDs, and a ducktail spoiler. A pronounced bumper and rounded wheel arches are also noticeable.

Future of the Lineup

It will be interesting to see whether Earth and Venus are merely futuristic design exercises or early precursors of where Hyundai’s electric lineup is headed alongside the Ioniq 3, 5, 6, and 9 models.

Further Plans and Exhibitions

The timing of the announcement, as well as its focus on China, suggests the concepts could make their first public appearance at the Beijing Auto Show on April 24. Hyundai could also reveal the designs earlier at its own event on April 10.

Beyond global ambitions and the focus on China, Hyundai plans an aggressive product refresh in North America, where 36 new or updated models are expected over the next five years. This list includes an SUV and a body-on-frame pickup truck, previewed by the Boulder concept at the New York Auto Show.

The presentation of the Earth and Venus concepts takes place against the backdrop of Hyundai’s broader transformation in the electric segment. The Ioniq sub-brand, initially associated with a more technological and eco-friendly philosophy than the main brand, now appears to be receiving a new, bolder design identity. The appeal to space themes and sharp geometric forms may be an attempt to differentiate future models not only from competitors but also from previous Ioniq generations, creating a distinct, recognizable design code. The success of this approach will largely depend on how well the radical concepts can be adapted for series production while preserving their uniqueness and appeal.
