Hyundai Introduces Two Ioniq Concept Models for the Chinese Market
The Chinese electric vehicle market has become a place where global brands often completely rethink their approaches. The Ioniq brand has served as Hyundai’s premium electric vehicle series for Western markets for several years. Now Hyundai is introducing Ioniq in China, but not with existing models. Instead, the company showcased two concept cars ahead of the Auto China show in Beijing.
All future Ioniq models that Hyundai will sell in China will be named after planets. The first two concepts are named Venus and Earth. Venus is a sleek sedan, and Earth is an SUV. Hyundai stated that the Ioniq series will “evolve beyond a product lineup into a broader mobility ecosystem tailored for local customers.”
Venus Concept: A Tall Sedan with Radical Design
Hyundai describes Venus and Earth as design “barometers” for future production models. Venus is presented in a “Shining Gold” hue and does not resemble any other Ioniq model we have seen before. Like the Ioniq 5, it has a rather high stance, an aggressive front end with slim LEDs and a large grille.
The interior is also quite interesting, featuring numerous gold accents and a panoramic screen for the multimedia system and the front passenger, similar to the current Hyundai Elexio produced in China.
The question of how much this concept’s interior will influence future production models remains open, but it certainly makes a strong impression.
Earth Concept: An Even More Dramatic SUV
The Earth SUV looks even more impressive. Having some resemblance to recent Kia concepts, it features a bold front end and a robust design, painted in a color Hyundai calls “Aurora Shield.” A glimpse inside the cabin reveals rear-hinged doors, a central touchscreen resembling a tablet, and special seats with air modules.
Starting with the two concept cars unveiled today, we will continue to introduce products that reflect a deep understanding of Chinese customers and our sincere commitment to this market
— stated Li Fengang, President of Beijing Hyundai Motor Company.
He also added that future production models, built on the unwavering principles of Ioniq—global safety and quality—will combine the smart driving and smart cabin that Chinese consumers demand.
Expectations for Production Models
Hyundai has not yet announced when the first Ioniq models designed exclusively for China will be launched, but their arrival should not be too far off. This step underscores the strategic importance of the Chinese market for Hyundai, where local tastes and technological expectations shape the products of global brands. The presented concepts demonstrate not only a new design approach but also a desire to create a separate, tailored identity for Ioniq in the region, which could influence the brand’s development as a whole. The success of these future models could become an indicator of how flexible a global automotive company can be in responding to the specific challenges of the world’s largest electric vehicle market.
