Autonomous Patrol Vehicle in Miami-Dade
The Miami-Dade Police Department has been joined by an autonomous patrol vehicle named PUG (Police Unmanned Ground Patrol Partner). Its primary task is to patrol high-crime areas and report suspicious incidents. The vehicle is equipped with a drone launch system and a license plate scanner.
Collaboration and Functionality
The project was implemented in collaboration with the company Policing Lab, which describes PUG as the country’s first autonomous patrol vehicle. It aims to enhance the efficiency of law enforcement, ensure safety, and optimize resource utilization.
This technology enhances situational awareness, automates routine tasks, and allows officers to focus on the complex and human aspects of police work.
Technical Features
The autonomous vehicle is built on a Ford Police Interceptor Utility base using autonomous driving technologies from Perrone Robotics. It can patrol dangerous zones, serving as a visual deterrent. Furthermore, PUG is equipped with cameras, a thermal imaging system, a license plate scanner, and a drone launch device. This allows for real-time data transmission and rapid detection of, for example, wanted vehicles.
Pilot Program and Public Opinion
Currently, PUG is in the testing phase. It will be used by the Community Collaboration Bureau and will appear at public events to gather feedback from residents. The pilot program will last one year, and its success will be evaluated based on the following criteria: response speed, crime deterrence effectiveness, officer safety, and community trust.
The implementation of autonomous technologies in law enforcement is causing controversy among the public. Some see it as a step into the future, while others question the effectiveness and ethical aspects of using such systems. However, it is already clear that such innovations can significantly change approaches to law enforcement, especially in conditions of limited resources. It is important that technologies like PUG not only increase operational efficiency but also ensure transparency and trust between law enforcement and the community.
