New BMW iX4 gets coupe design, but interior finish is even more impressive

BMW iX4 undergoes cold-weather testing

The new BMW iX4 electric crossover-coupe has been spotted during testing in cold weather conditions. The car is expected to debut next year in two main trim levels.

Design and exterior

Although the front of the car will be easily recognizable as a BMW, the differences begin further back. The iX4 will feature a steeply raked windshield that flows smoothly into a streamlined roofline. This solution significantly reduces the glass area and may limit headroom for second-row passengers.

The trunk volume is also likely to be small due to the compact rear window and a pronounced spoiler. The rear of the car will be straight-lined, similar to the iX3 model.

Technical specifications and equipment

The interior is expected to inherit features from the iX3. The central element will be a wide Panoramic iDisplay, stretching from pillar to pillar, with a diagonal of 17.9 inches. The cabin will also receive a minimalist instrument panel, a futuristic steering wheel, a 3D projection display, and an intelligent voice assistant.

Sources report that for the US market, the 2027 model year will be offered in 40 xDrive and 50 xDrive versions.

The top 50 xDrive version is likely to be analogous to the iX3 with the same power. It will receive a battery with a capacity of 108.7 kWh and two electric motors providing all-wheel drive. The total system power will be 463 hp, allowing the car to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds. The top speed will be limited to 130 mph, and the WLTP range may reach 500 miles.

Less powerful version

The 40 xDrive trim remains more mysterious. Preliminary data indicates the possible use of a smaller 82.6 kWh battery and less powerful electric motors. More detailed information may appear later this year along with the presentation of the corresponding iX3 version.

The emergence of the iX4 is a logical step for BMW in expanding its range of electric crossovers. The model is positioned as a more stylish and sporty alternative to the regular iX3, aimed at buyers who value dynamics and exterior design but are willing to sacrifice some of the practicality of the rear seats and cargo space. The success of this model in the market will largely depend on the final balance of price, range characteristics, and design solutions offered by the company.
