by BMW Prepares a Hydrogen-Powered X5 SUV
BMW continues to develop hydrogen technologies, despite the fact that many other automakers are focusing on hybrids and electric vehicles. The German brand has confirmed that its first series-production fuel cell vehicle will hit the market in 2028.
Collaboration with Toyota and Market Prospects
BMW has been collaborating with Toyota on hydrogen technologies for many years. The first model with such an engine will be a special version of the fifth-generation X5, which will be sold alongside other modifications. Although sales volumes will be small, this model could become an interesting alternative for environmentally conscious buyers.
Sales of the hydrogen X5 will be limited to regions with the necessary refueling infrastructure, so the model’s availability will depend on the market.
Evolution of BMW’s Hydrogen Technologies
The first generation of BMW’s hydrogen powertrain appeared back in 2014 on the 5-Series model, known as the 535iA. This system was fully supplied by Toyota. The second generation is used in a test fleet of iX5 Hydrogen vehicles, where the fuel cells are supplied by Toyota, and the system is developed by BMW itself. The third generation, which will be installed on the series-production X5, takes up 25% less space and has a higher power density.
Production Preparation and Design
Prototypes of the new system are already being developed at BMW’s headquarters in Munich. Production of fuel cells will begin in 2028 at the company’s plant in Steyr, Austria. Externally, the new X5 will receive a Neue Klasse design, and the interior will be completely updated, with a new infotainment system and a panoramic screen.
Hydrogen technologies remain niche, but BMW is confident in their potential, especially for markets with developed infrastructure. This could be an important step in reducing dependence on traditional fuels, providing consumers with an additional choice among environmentally friendly alternatives.
