Denza Z: Chinese competitor to Maserati enters the global stage
Denza, a company owned by BYD and focused on export markets, has unveiled a new production model that could pose a serious challenge to the Maserati GranCabrio Folgore. The production version of the Denza Z will be available in coupe, convertible, and track-ready body styles, combining elegant design with a high-performance electric powertrain and advanced electronics.
Design and style
The Z convertible looks more elegant compared to the closed version, although they share most body panels. The open four-seat cabin and redesigned rear deck create more appealing proportions, while the bumper design is more refined than the aggressive body kit of the previous show car.
The example showcased at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show combines a blue-green shade with a matte finish and a three-color interior, evoking associations with Maserati. Although the soft top was not shown in action, previous spy photos confirm it is made of fabric.
Design team and technologies
The model was developed under the leadership of former Audi chief designer Wolfgang Egger, who is responsible for the styling of BYD’s brands: Denza, Fang Cheng Bao, and YangWang.
The Z series will be equipped with three electric motors, providing all-wheel drive and a total output of around 1000 hp (746 kW / 1014 PS). The car will also feature BYD’s DiSus-M electromagnetic suspension, the latest ‘God’s Eye’ driver assistance system, and a battery pack compatible with fast-charging technology.
Global ambitions
Interestingly, the Denza Z will first appear in Europe and other global markets, and only later in Chinese showrooms. After its premiere at the Beijing Auto Show, the model will make its dynamic debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK.
In China, according to local media estimates, the price will be around ¥400,000–500,000 ($58,600–73,200), significantly lower than sports cars and supercars from Western brands.
The global launch of the Denza Z demonstrates a strategic move by BYD: the Chinese manufacturer is not merely copying Western models, but creating a competitive product with unique design and advanced technologies. The combination of over 1000 hp, a luxurious interior, and an aggressive price makes this model a serious contender in the premium electric vehicle segment. If build quality and service support meet the claimed standards, the Denza Z could significantly shift the market balance, forcing European manufacturers to reconsider their pricing policies.
