New Jaguar Type 01: Electric rebirth of a British legend
Jaguar has officially named its upcoming fully electric sedan. The model is called Type 01, which differs from the concept presented in 2024 by just one digit. The British manufacturer claims this name “opens a new era” and joins the exclusive list of Jaguar models that used the ‘Type’ badge, including the D-Type, E-Type, and F-Type.
The Type 01 designation will be executed discreetly as a motif near the base of the windshield. The company explains that the digit ‘0’ symbolizes the electric powertrain and zero exhaust emissions, while ‘1’ indicates the status of the first Jaguar of a new, fully electric era. It is not the most expressive name, but it sounds better than the Type 00 concept.
Although the name of the new model has a certain meaning, it will have a very minor impact on whether the electric sedan becomes successful. There are no official images of the finished design yet, but spy photos show that it will be very similar to the concept, although it will gain an extra pair of doors. The car will stand out on the road, but its design will be controversial.
Power over 1,000 horsepower
The powertrain will also be crucial. It is known that the car will use a new dedicated platform, the Jaguar Electric Architecture. It includes one electric motor driving the front wheels and two motors at the rear. Overall, the car will produce over 1,000 horsepower and approximately 1,300 Nm of torque.
The electric vehicle’s battery pack will have a capacity of around 120 kWh, although the source of its origin is not yet known. Jaguar’s last electric model, the I-Pace, received several awards after its launch but was repeatedly recalled due to problematic batteries from LG. Jaguar cannot afford to repeat these mistakes.
Key specifications
Despite the Type 01 name being a symbolic step into a new era, the model’s success will depend on its technical specifications, reliability, and ability to convince buyers of the advantages of an electric future. The company must demonstrate that its new approach to design and technology can compete with the best in the premium segment, while avoiding the problems that plagued previous models. Only after the official presentation and first test drives will it become clear whether the Type 01 can become a worthy successor to the legendary ‘Type’ models and win the hearts of brand enthusiasts.
