New Ferrari Electric Car Looks Like a Bread Van, But It’s Just an Optical Illusion

Ferrari Announcement and Mysterious Prototypes

October 9th will be an important day for Ferrari. It is then that Maranello will preliminarily present the electric powertrain for their first-ever electric car, although the car itself will be unveiled only next year. The new model, referred to in circles close to the company as Elettrica, is considered a crossover that will be smaller in size than the Purosangue. This detail is not yet confirmed, and Ferrari’s test mules have only deepened the mystery.

Unexpected Prototype Design

Until now, prototypes had a shell resembling a mix of the Purosangue and the Maserati Levante, making it impossible to determine the final shape. Now, a new batch of spy shots from Derek Photography on Instagram has appeared. This time, the heavily camouflaged body looks completely different and creates an impression of a silhouette in the style of a ‘bread van’, at least due to the thick camouflage.

‘Bread van’ is a name often given to the unique Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta SWB. Built for the Le Mans race, it had a very unconventional body with a roofline that stretched all the way to the rear of the car. The French press of that time called it ‘La Camionnette’, and English-speaking journalists translated this as ‘Bread Van’.

Similarity and Camouflage

It’s hard not to notice the similarity in the spy shots below. Just like that 250 GT SWB, this electric prototype showcases a roof that runs straight to the rear bumper and a square rear window with rounded corners. However, before anyone gets too excited, the last image in the series reveals the trick of the camouflage, showing a slanted rear window hidden under the cladding.

This is the only time we have seen a prototype of this shape and size from Ferrari. Every other time our spies caught Ferrari testing their electric car, it was much more streamlined, although always in the form of a test mule, which is always deceptive. Since the powertrain presentation is happening next month, there is hope that Ferrari will also show a teaser of the car itself.

Ferrari’s Roadmap

Ferrari has certainly not been in a hurry to bring its electric car to market. In its defense, the company stated it would talk about its first electric car in 2025, and, of course, there is less than a month left until that event.

Ferrari is expected to start deliveries to customers in about a year. Below are some spy shots of another Ferrari EV test mule that we published back in May.

The arrival of the first electric Ferrari is undoubtedly a historic event for the automotive world. Despite the brand’s conservative approach, the transition to electric power is an inevitable step in modern conditions. It is interesting that the company maintains secrecy around the design, using various camouflage techniques, which indicates a desire to create something truly unique, not just follow trends. The success of this model could significantly influence the strategy of other supercar manufacturers regarding their own electric projects.
