New Jaguar Electric Car Produces V8 Sounds and It’s Confusing

Key Highlights of the New Jaguar Electric Model

Transition to an Electric Future

Several years ago, Jaguar made the controversial decision to fully transition to electric power, gradually phasing out all internal combustion engine models. This is part of the brand’s strategy to compete with luxury brands like Bentley. A recently published spy video of the future electric four-door GT shows that, while moving forward, the company still wants to maintain a connection with its past.

First Sounds of the New Concept

This is not the first time the production version of the Jaguar Type 00 concept has been spotted during testing, but it is the first time we hear its sound on video. At around the 12-second mark, the camouflaged prototype drives past the camera, going up a small incline, and the sound is unmistakable. Instead of the muted hum of a regular electric car, a low growl is heard, typically associated with a Jaguar V8 engine.

The V8 Legacy in the Electric Era

Prior to its transition to electricity, Jaguar was renowned for its V8 engines, from the turbocharged 5.0-liter versions of the F-Type to the high-performance F-Pace. All of them had a fantastic sound, and it seems the brand has installed an artificial sound generator on the electric GT to give it the emotionality that many modern electric cars lack.

Sound Design Trends

Jaguar is likely developing several different internal combustion engine sound options for the Type 00, and certainly, owners will be able to choose between these sounds or complete silence. Hyundai started the trend of electric cars with ICE sound with the Ioniq 5 N model, and others have already joined, such as the Abarth 500e and Dodge Charger Daytona. Even the first electric Ferrari is believed to be getting a similar system.

Design and Technical Features

Besides the sound system, the new Jaguar will look very similar to the elegant two-door concept presented at the end of last year. This means it will have the same striking front end, long hood, wide track, and sportback-type body. It is unknown if it will lack the fixed rear glass like the concept, but the Polestar 4 has already proven that a rear window is not mandatory in the era of compact rear-facing cameras.

Platform and Expectations

Built on Jaguar’s new electric platform, the GT is expected to offer a range of approximately 430 miles (692 kilometers). The full presentation is expected by the end of the year, which will provide a clearer idea of how the brand plans to combine heritage with electric ambitions.

This approach by Jaguar to preserving an emotional connection through sound could be key to attracting traditional brand enthusiasts who appreciate the character of internal combustion engines. The implementation of such technologies not only emphasizes the uniqueness of the brand but also demonstrates how automakers can adapt to new trends without losing their identity.
