New VW electric car costing $16,200 is longer than a Jetta and runs on Xpeng technologies

Volkswagen unveils new ID. Unyx 07 electric liftback in China

Chinese EV showrooms are already overflowing, but Volkswagen has decided to add another model. The new ID. Unyx 07 is the latest addition to the brand’s lineup in China, created by the Volkswagen Anhui joint venture. The car is built on technologies developed together with Xpeng.

The model’s length is 4,853 mm, with a wheelbase of 2,826 mm. This makes it 108 mm shorter than the ID.7 and 133 mm longer than the Tesla Model 3. Compared to the American VW Jetta sedan, the new model is 151 mm longer, and the wheelbase has increased by 140 mm, which should provide significantly more interior space.

Familiar design, different body

The ID. Unyx 07 does not use the newer design language of the larger ID. Unyx 08 crossover. Instead, it looks like a lower and more streamlined version of the ID. Unyx 06 crossover, which, in turn, is the Chinese version of the Cupra Tavascan.

The front features aggressive headlights, sporty air intakes, and a pronounced spoiler. The profile stands out with sharp lines, a short hood, and a fast roofline. The rear features full-width LED lighting, a simulated diffuser, and a trunk volume of 711 liters.

Technical specifications and new architecture

The ID. Unyx 07 is built on the MEB platform and is equipped with a single rear electric motor producing 228 hp (170 kW). A 60 kWh battery provides a range of up to 558 km on the CLTC cycle.

The main innovation is the Chinese Electronic Architecture (CEA), developed jointly with Xpeng. It consolidates functions into four main control zones, reducing the number of electronic control units by approximately 30%.

Interior with plenty of screens

The cabin features a 10.25-inch instrument cluster, a 15-inch touchscreen infotainment display, and a 12-inch display for the passenger. A 27-inch augmented reality head-up display is also available. The system runs on a MediaTek 8676 processor and features an AI voice assistant capable of recognizing multiple passengers.

Other features include a two-spoke steering wheel with integrated buttons, ambient lighting that extends onto the door trim, a power panoramic roof with a physical sunshade. There’s also a 12-speaker audio system, 12-way power sport seats, and cabin fragrance. All trims are equipped with Xpeng’s NOA driver assistance system.

Prices and competitors

The new VW ID. Unyx 07 is already available for order in China. The price for the Pure version starts at 129,900 yuan ($19,100), and for the Pure SE at 139,900 yuan ($20,600). Early customers can take advantage of discounts and purchase the car for 109,900 yuan ($16,200) and 119,900 yuan ($17,700), respectively.

Main competitors in the Chinese market include the BYD Seal 06 EV, XPeng Mona M03, Geely Galaxy E8, Deepal SL03, and Tesla Model 3.

Volkswagen Anhui

The new electric vehicle demonstrates how the German automaker is adapting to the demands of the Chinese market, where competition is extremely high. Collaboration with Xpeng allows VW to integrate advanced technologies, particularly in the fields of electronic architecture and driver assistance systems. This could become a key factor for the model’s success, as Chinese buyers increasingly value innovation and digital features. At the same time, an aggressive pricing policy, with a starting price of around $16,200, makes the ID. Unyx 07 a direct competitor to local brands that dominate the affordable EV segment.
