New Electric Crossover from Chevrolet Has a Chinese ‘Twin’

Chevrolet Captiva EV: A New Electric Crossover for Global Markets

Chevrolet continues to expand its lineup of electric vehicles, and the new product is the electric Captiva. However, this model will not appear in the USA – it is intended for the markets of Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa. The Captiva name has been used before for compact crossovers in Europe, Australia, and Southeast Asia, but now the model has fully transitioned to electric power.

The design of the Captiva EV is based on the Chinese Wuling Starlight S, although Chevrolet has made minor changes to make the car better match the brand’s style. The front features slim LED headlights, and the rear is almost identical to the Wuling. Interestingly, despite its electric nature, the model has retained a large radiator grille, which distinguishes it from modern grille-less EVs.

Technical specifications have not yet been disclosed, but the Captiva EV is expected to inherit from the Wuling Starlight S a range of up to 317 miles and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.7 seconds. Fast charging from 30% to 80% in 20 minutes is also anticipated. The model is currently undergoing final testing before launch into production.

This move by General Motors indicates the growing competition in developing markets, where affordability and practicality often determine a model’s success. The choice of these specific regions for the launch of the Captiva EV underscores the company’s strategy focused on mass-market consumers with a limited budget.
