Haval’s New Flagship SUV Aims to Compete with Defender and Land Cruiser

Official Presentation of the New Haval Flagship

The Haval brand, owned by Great Wall Motor, is preparing to present its new full-size SUV at the Beijing Auto Show. The model, currently indexed as HX, is positioned as a flagship and is set to become a serious competitor to vehicles like the Toyota Land Cruiser and Land Rover Defender. This could be a landmark event for the brand, which previously did not stand out with particularly bright offerings in the market.

Key Features and Design

Haval designers seem to have been inspired by iconic off-roaders, among which features of the Defender and the Chinese YangWang U8 can be recognized. The car is shown in a two-tone “bronze-black” color scheme, reminiscent of the flagship SUV from BYD.

Technical Features and Equipment

Externally, the HX stands out with massive square headlights, a simple silver grille, and a black bumper. A LiDAR is installed on the roof, and massive door handles and square wheel arches are noticeable on the sides. The rear with rectangular LED taillights, split tailgate doors, and a spare wheel mount looks particularly expressive.

The car is built on the GWM One architecture. Initially, it will enter the market as a plug-in hybrid with all-wheel drive and an interesting four-speed automatic transmission. Final power specifications are still being clarified.

Haval designers clearly drew inspiration from the most noticeable off-roaders on the market, such as the Defender and YangWang U8.

Like most modern Chinese cars, the HX will receive autonomous driving features, including a Navigate On Autopilot system for city and highway use, as well as autonomous parking functions.

Market Launch Plans

Information on pricing has not been disclosed yet. The model is expected to go on sale by the end of the third quarter. In addition to the Chinese market, there is a high probability of exporting the HX to a number of foreign countries, highlighting Great Wall Motor’s ambitions for global expansion.

The appearance of such a car could significantly change the perception of the Haval brand on the international stage. The model’s success will depend not only on aggressive design and technical equipment but also on build quality, operational reliability, and price competitiveness. The full-size SUV market is very demanding, and Chinese manufacturers will have to prove their reputation in practice to truly compete with already recognizable names.
