New Volkswagen van appears in GTI style, but the engine remains unchanged

New sporty look for the Volkswagen Transporter

Volkswagen has introduced a new sporty version of its Transporter van called the Sportline. This model occupies the top position in the lineup and is distinguished by an aggressive body kit, large 19-inch alloy wheels, a lowered suspension, and a rich list of standard equipment.

Stylistic features of the Sportline

This is not the company’s first attempt to release a Sportline version of the Transporter. The new model continues the familiar formula, receiving a radiator grille with glossy black trim and a characteristic red stripe on the front bumper, reminiscent of the legendary GTI models. On the side, confidence is added by the new 19-inch wheels and a suspension lowered by 29 mm from Eibach. The rear has received a massive bumper, a red model name, and a roof spoiler.

It doesn’t look as dramatic as the Ford Transit Custom MS-RT, but the Sportline makeover still gives this van a distinctive character.

Interior and technical features

The interior has received sports seats with eco-leather and red stitching, illuminated sills, a heated leather steering wheel, and full carpet floor covering. The model is available in Panel Van and Kombi versions with two wheelbase options. Despite the update, the powertrains remain the same: buyers can choose a diesel engine, a plug-in hybrid, or a fully electric e-Transporter version, which with 282 hp even surpasses the GTI.

Special series and more affordable version

In addition to the standard Sportline, Volkswagen will also release a limited Sportline 75 series to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the iconic VW Bus. It will be exclusively in Moss Green color with unique mirror badges, green interior stitching, and a numbered plaque.

A more affordable Commerce Pro S version has also been presented, with sporty design elements such as spoilers, skirts, and illuminated sills, but on 17-inch wheels.

Prices and competitors

In the UK, the Transporter Sportline will cost from £62,752, the limited Sportline 75 series from £64,552, and the Commerce Pro S from £53,086. The main competitors of the model are the Ford Transit Custom MS-RT, as well as models from Stellantis: Vauxhall Vivaro GS, Fiat Scudo Onyx, Citroen Dispatch VTR, and Peugeot Expert Sport.

The release of a sporty version of a commercial van highlights the trend towards diversification of the light commercial vehicle market. Manufacturers are increasingly trying to attract not only corporate clients but also private buyers looking for a versatile yet stylish and dynamic vehicle. The success of models like the Transporter Sportline could significantly expand the target audience, traditionally limited to business needs.
