The new generation Hyundai Elantra impresses with its bold design, which resembles the Tesla Cybertruck. However, as renderings show, this radical style could be even more successful in a station wagon version.
Render: Elantra as an elegant station wagon
New visualizations by designer Kelsonik reimagine the Elantra, transforming it into a sharp station wagon. The extended roof and rear end give the car a truly attractive shape. The bulging arches, which look somewhat odd on the sedan, perfectly suit the longer body.
The renderings leave the front of the Elantra unchanged but alter the roof and rear. Black roof rails and enlarged side windows behind the C-pillars create the correct station wagon silhouette. The changes are subtle individually but completely transform the car’s appearance.
We will reserve final judgment until the car appears in metal, but even at this early stage, the car has clearly divided opinions. These renderings hint at one way Hyundai could mute criticism, as the station wagon version of the 2027 Elantra surprisingly suits the bold design, and the extended roofline makes it significantly more attractive. The problem is that this will never happen.
Why won’t the station wagon appear?
Despite its appeal, an Elantra-based station wagon is unlikely to see the light of day. Earlier this week, Hyundai Europe head Xavier Martinet reported that after production of the current third-generation i30 ends, production of the i30 Wagon will also cease.
According to Hyundai, demand for station wagons is limited, especially in China and the USA. Additionally, the company makes more money on SUVs than on station wagons, so spending budget on developing a new station wagon is simply unprofitable.
Future of the Elantra: N-version
Although unfortunate, the new Elantra will likely receive a high-performance N-version, which should satisfy most car enthusiasts. According to recent reports, the car will abandon the old 2.0-liter engine in favor of a larger 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, possibly with some form of electrification.
Thus, while the idea of an Elantra station wagon looks very appealing, the reality is that Hyundai will focus on more profitable segments. However, the N-version promises to be a worthy alternative for those seeking a sporty and practical car.
