Mitsubishi’s new hybrid Outlander delivers 174 horsepower and barely manages 28 miles per gallon

New 2026 Mitsubishi Outlander Hybrid: What’s changed?

Last summer, Mitsubishi announced that the 2026 Outlander would receive an entirely new hybrid powertrain. Details were limited at the time, but the company noted that the new engine would replace the existing 2.5-liter four-cylinder unit producing 181 hp (135 kW / 184 PS) and 181 lb-ft (245 Nm) of torque.

Today, the manufacturer confirmed that the model is equipped with a “Mitsubishi-developed” 1.5-liter turbo engine paired with a 48-volt mild hybrid system. It delivers 174 hp (130 kW / 176 PS) and 206 lb-ft (279 Nm) of torque.

Fuel economy figures proved disappointing for a hybrid. According to Mitsubishi, the model achieves up to 26 miles per gallon in the city, 31 miles per gallon on the highway, and 28 miles per gallon combined. This is barely more than the previous model, which had an EPA rating of up to 24 mpg city, 31 mpg highway, and 27 mpg combined.

Despite the new powertrain, the price has increased only slightly. The base Outlander ES trim rose from $29,645 to $29,995, a small increase of $350. However, the destination charge went up from $1,495 to $1,745, making the total increase $600.

New Trims and Special Editions

Outlander LE

In addition to the hybrid powertrain and price increase, a new Outlander LE trim has appeared, starting at $32,345. This is a value-oriented model featuring fog lights and 20-inch alloy wheels with a black finish. The crossover also comes equipped with rain sensors, silver exterior trim, and heated mirrors.

Interior updates include leatherette seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Other features include an 8-way power driver’s seat, a wireless smartphone charger, adaptive cruise control, and the HomeLink system.

The Platinum version disappears in 2026, but Ralliart, Trail, and Black Edition versions appear. The all-wheel-drive Outlander Ralliart starts at $39,645 and is based on the SE trim.

It features a black hood emblem, body side graphics, and special exterior trim. These are joined by numerous Ralliart accessories, including a spoiler and mudguards. The model also has a Ralliart start button and Ralliart floor mats.

Outlander Trail Edition

The Outlander Trail Edition also starts at $39,645 and is based on the SE trim. It features black 18-inch wheels and black chrome trim. There are also numerous other black accents, including a hood decal, door handles, and mirror caps. Inside, all-weather floor mats and a cargo tray are installed.

Finally, the Outlander Black Edition starts at $43,045 and is based on the top-tier SEL trim with the Premium package. It features 20-inch black wheels, black door handles, and Black Edition badges. Inside, black leather seats with semi-aniline upholstery are installed.

The updated Outlander received a new engine which, despite being a hybrid, demonstrates rather modest fuel economy figures, which may disappoint buyers expecting significantly better efficiency. Instead, Mitsubishi focused on expanding the trim lineup, adding new LE, Trail, and Black Edition versions that offer a variety of equipment and style options. The base model’s price increased insignificantly, making it more affordable than one might expect given the technical changes. It is worth noting that the Ralliart version, despite its sporty appearance, did not receive a significant power increase, making it more of a stylistic update than a technical one. Overall, the 2026 Outlander appears to be an evolutionary update that offers more choice for buyers but does not revolutionize the segment.
