GM’s New Hybrid SUV Looks Great, But You Can Only Buy It in China

Premiere of the New Family Hybrid

The SAIC-GM-Wuling joint venture officially revealed the new Xingguang L (Starlight L) ahead of its debut at the Auto China show later this month. It is a family plug-in hybrid that, according to the manufacturer, combines “premium comfort with an affordable price.”

Elegant Exterior Appearance

The three-row crossover has a sleek design inspired by “Chinese aesthetics.” The front of the car draws attention with its vertical grille, split light units, and a full-width LED light bar. Also noticeable are active shutters in the lower part of the bumper and a smooth chrome trim piece.

The side profile is accentuated by a sharp shoulder line, a large glass area with bright window surrounds, streamlined body panels, pronounced wheel arches, and 20-inch wheels.

The rear is equipped with angular taillights connected by an illuminated light bar. Also worth noting is the rear wiper, which appears to be hidden under the spoiler.

Color Palette and Dimensions

The Xingguang L will be offered in five colors: black, blue, green, silver, and white. The green color looks particularly striking, likely a result of applying a “premium high-gloss BASF 2K coating in an eight-layer process for long-lasting shine and scratch resistance.”

Regarding dimensions, the model has a length of 196 inches (4980 mm), a width of 76 inches (1930 mm), and a height of 69.3 inches (1760 mm). The wheelbase is 116.1 inches (2950 mm). For comparison, this crossover in size sits between the Chevrolet Equinox and Traverse, as it is 8.5 inches (216 mm) shorter than the latter and has a 4.9-inch (124 mm) shorter wheelbase.

Elegant and Minimalist Interior

The six-seat interior is equipped with an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster and a 15.6-inch infotainment system. Also present is a sporty flat-bottom multifunction steering wheel, laser-engraved wood trim, soft-touch materials, and genuine metal speaker grilles.

The manufacturer also mentioned a 256-color ambient lighting system, ergonomically contoured seats, and air vents with a lattice pattern. The photos also reveal wireless charging for two smartphones simultaneously, metal toggle switches, and contrast stitching.

Amenities for Second-Row Passengers

As is often the case in the Chinese market, a lot of attention is paid to second-row passengers. In the Xingguang L, they will find fold-down tray tables, as well as a button on the side of the passenger seat that moves the front seat forward to create additional legroom.

More detailed information will be revealed later this month, but GM has stated that the model will have a best-in-class CLTC all-electric range of 162 miles (260 km).

Side view of the Wuling Xingguang L

The arrival of the Wuling Xingguang L clearly demonstrates the trend of the Chinese auto industry to rapidly improve the quality and technological level of models previously associated with the budget segment. The combination of large size, three-row layout, a modern hybrid powertrain with a long electric range, and premium styling at an affordable price could make this model very attractive to the local market. Particularly interesting is the emphasis on second-row passenger comfort, which aligns with cultural specifics where rear seats are often occupied by senior family members or important passengers. The success of this model could indicate a further shift in focus within the global affordable family car segment.
