Mercedes Shows Prototype of the New G-Class Cabriolet
Mercedes-Benz has begun the active testing phase of a new cabriolet based on the legendary G-Class. The manufacturer has released images of the prototype, which is part of a fleet of cars deployed worldwide for “rigorous testing.”
The initial tests, quite logically, are being conducted in Austria, where the off-roader is manufactured by Magna Steyr. Engineers are gathering comprehensive data to guarantee that the open-top version will deliver the unparalleled and recognizable driving experience characteristic of the G-Class.
Testing in Extreme Conditions
After Austria, the car will head to Sweden for testing in icy winter conditions. This stage is intended to demonstrate the model’s uncompromising capabilities, handling dynamics, and reliability at extremely low temperatures. The cold will also reveal the effectiveness and seal of the new folding soft top.
The published photos clearly show that the model has received a folding roof with a relatively small rear window. The third brake light has been moved to the spare wheel mount and is positioned almost in the center of this glass.
Design and Technical Features
The design reveals a thickened C-pillar and a black decorative strip that visually separates the main body from the roof. Also, the body will most likely receive additional reinforcements to compensate for rigidity, and the interior will get an updated dashboard with switches specific to convertibles. The installation of seats with the Airscarf neck heating function is possible.

The Cabriolet’s Heart: Expected Engines
The powertrains will most likely be borrowed from the standard G-Class. This means that under the hood could be a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine producing 443 hp (449 PS) with 559 Nm of torque. There is also a possibility of a version with a bi-turbo 4.0-liter V8, delivering 577 hp (585 PS) and 849 Nm of torque.
Limited Series and High Price
The manufacturer refers to the future G‑Class Cabriolet as a “special version,” which directly indicates limited production numbers. Consequently, the price for this exclusive off-roader will be correspondingly high, emphasizing its status. More detailed information will become available in the coming months.
The emergence of the G-Class Cabriolet is not just a model range expansion, but a return to its roots. Historically, open-top versions of the “Geländewagen” have always been rare and desirable. In the modern context, where trends often lean towards electrification and autonomy, such a project looks like a bold gesture, betting on emotions and uniqueness. This is a car created not for the mass market, but for collectors and true admirers of the legend, who value the combination of timeless design, luxury, and the absolute freedom granted by an open roof while traversing any terrain.
