New Maybach GLS 680: uncompromising luxury
For those seeking the highest level of luxury on the road but not satisfied with the space of the flagship Mercedes S-Class, Maybach offers a new solution. The brand’s answer is the new 2027 Mercedes-Maybach GLS 680, arriving just a few months after the comprehensive update of the standard model.
Design with chrome accents
Since this is a Maybach, the exterior design could not do without a generous amount of chrome, and this massive SUV delivers exactly that. It all starts at the front, where a new bright trim for the lower radiator grille and a central grille with vertical slats have appeared. Maybach details run through the air intakes, more polished elements adorn the redesigned front bumper, and the rear features a new tailgate with star-shaped taillight designs to ensure the status message is not lost even when driving away.
The outer edge of the grille, along with the Maybach branding, is also illuminated, though whether this looks elegant or vulgar remains for the buyer to decide. Those wanting more can add an illuminated Mercedes emblem on the hood, with rose gold accents placed inside and between the headlights.
As on the regular GLS, star-shaped LED daytime running lights are mounted at the front. 22-inch wheels are standard, although customers can order larger 23-inch forged wheels with a chrome finish. This larger set features a gyroscopic center cap with the Mercedes star, which remains level even as the wheel rotates. Buyers not particularly fond of shiny details can opt for the Night Series Design Package and Exterior Design Package, which replace elements with dark chrome, black anodized aluminum side steps, and larger wheels with a dark finish.
Interior: true luxury
Of course, the true highlight of the new GLS 680 is its interior. It is equipped with the latest MBUX infotainment system with Superscreen, which combines three 12.3-inch displays under a single pane of glass. The screens extend to the second row, where two 11.6-inch displays are installed, perfect for on-road entertainment.
New Nappa leather, available in beech brown and macchiato beige colors, adorns the seats, and business people being transported can enjoy the finest champagne thanks to two cup holders in the rear refrigerator.
Maybach has also added new sound insulation materials to the engine bay bulkhead and transmission tunnel to reduce the intrusion of outside noise into the cabin. A 15-speaker Burmester audio system with a 710-watt amplifier is also standard.
Hybrid V8 power
A new engine also appears under the hood. It is a new 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 from Mercedes-Benz with a flat-plane crankshaft, working in tandem with a 48-volt mild hybrid system that includes an integrated starter generator (ISG) and feeds a nine-speed automatic transmission, sending power to all four wheels. The V8 itself produces 603 hp and 850 Nm of torque, while the ISG adds another 23 hp. This is more than the 577-hp Mercedes-AMG GT 63 Coupe. Mercedes claims that balance shafts smooth out engine vibrations, making it quieter and more powerful.
Alongside the new engine, a redesigned steering system is installed for better maneuverability and precision, and a modernized air suspension has been developed for the GLS 680.
Innovative suspension and prospects
Optionally available is the E-Active Body Control function, which constantly monitors and adjusts spring and damper forces at each wheel up to 1000 times per second. A predictive system scans the road ahead and prepares the dampers before the wheels reach bumps, while an off-road mode allows the GLS to break free when the road gets tough. It even includes a setting where the GLS leans into corners by up to three degrees.
Mercedes-Maybach has not yet announced US pricing for the GLS 680, which will compete with the Bentley Bentayga, although it is expected to be higher than the previous GLS 600 model’s starting price of $180,000. The brand has confirmed that the vehicle will arrive in showrooms by the end of 2026, with production taking place in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, making it one of the most luxurious SUVs to roll off an American factory assembly line.
