Updated Mercedes GLB Before the Premiere
Mercedes-Benz is preparing to present the updated compact crossover GLB, whose debut is scheduled for December 8. The latest spy photos show that the car has almost completely shed its camouflage, revealing design details. The model will receive both electric and hybrid powertrains, making it a versatile choice for different types of buyers.
Similarity to Smart #5 and External Changes
Although the front and rear remain partially camouflaged, the car’s profile looks quite distinct. The design is evolutionary but with clear parallels to the Smart #5 model. Both cars feature integrated door handles, a similar window line, and characteristic wheel arches. Compared to the previous generation, the new GLB has received LED optics with star-like elements, smoother body contours, and a redesigned rear end with vertical taillights connected by a light bar. The license plate is now positioned on the bumper instead of the tailgate.
Interior with a Focus on Technology
The GLB’s interior was already presented earlier and impresses with its innovativeness. The optional MBUX Superscreen system includes three displays: a 10.25-inch instrument panel, a 14-inch central multimedia screen, and a 14-inch display for the front passenger. Furthermore, the interior features a new steering wheel, a floating center console, and wireless smartphone charging. The car is offered in five- and seven-seat configurations, with improved legroom and headroom in the second row, as well as more convenient access to the third row of seats.
Comfort and Powertrains
A panoramic glass roof will be standard equipment, and for an additional charge, an illuminated version with a ‘starry sky’ effect can be ordered. One of the roof variants is capable of instantly changing its transparency. Regarding powertrains, the electric versions will likely inherit components from the CLA, including an 85 kWh battery. The base model will have rear-wheel drive and a power output of 268 hp, while the all-wheel-drive variant will develop 349 hp. The hybrid version will combine a 1.5-liter engine with a recuperation system, offering two power levels — 154 or 181 hp.
The GLB update reflects Mercedes-Benz’s overall strategy of combining classic design with cutting-edge technology. The model not only retains practicality but also becomes more environmentally friendly due to electrification. Competition in the compact crossover segment is intensifying, and the GLB could become a key player thanks to its variety of powertrains and improved comfort features.
