First images of the prototype
The segment of compact unibody pickups has proven in recent years that good money can be made on “not-real” trucks. Toyota decided not to stay on the sidelines, but not yet for North America. A camouflaged prototype was spotted on roads in Brazil. Beneath the layers of camouflage, a familiar silhouette is recognizable — it’s a Corolla Cross, but with a cargo bed at the rear.
Details from Brazil
The images were published by BlogAuto, which filmed a double-cab prototype on a highway in São Paulo. From the windshield forward, it is almost an exact copy of the Corolla Cross — with the same headlights and body shape. It appears Toyota extended the body to add a cargo bed, with most of the extra length going into the rear overhang, not the wheelbase.
By the way: The next generation Corolla Cross will be larger, and the RAV4 should be worried.
Other details complete the picture: square wheel arches, a beltline rising towards the rear, roof rails transitioning into small spoilers. The tailgate is large, with an integrated step, and the taillights appear to span the full width of the body, like on the Crown Signia.
Technical details and timeline
The fact that a working prototype has already hit public roads indicates the development program is well beyond the initial stage. The pickup is expected to use the TNGA architecture, reinforced where necessary for load-carrying duties. This will allow it to compete with other South American pickups such as the Fiat Toro, Ram Rampage, and Chevrolet Montana, as well as future VW Tukan and Renault Niagara.
By the way: The new compact pickup from VW looks like a crossover with a cargo bed.
Local sources report on the engine lineup: a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter engine and a 1.8-liter self-charging hybrid borrowed from the crossover. The most interesting option is a locally developed plug-in hybrid capable of running on biofuels with standard E-Four all-wheel drive. This would be a truly Brazilian answer to the global formula.
Toyota is expected to unveil the Corolla Cross-based pickup in the first quarter of 2027. Production will likely be set up at the Sorocaba plant (Brazil), alongside the Corolla Cross itself. This pickup is part of Toyota’s investment of 11 billion reals ($2.2 billion) in its Brazilian operations until 2030.
The situation in the US
The Brazilian sighting came shortly after Tetsuo Ogawa, CEO of Toyota Motor North America, acknowledged the company is eyeing the compact pickup segment in the US. But he did not name the Corolla as the base. Ogawa pointed to the larger RAV4 as a likely base for a Ford Maverick competitor, adding that such a project “takes time.”
Whether Toyota will launch two separate pickup programs or combine them into a single global strategy remains an open question. For now, Brazil gets a Corolla Cross-based pickup, and North America gets only a promise.

This news underscores Toyota’s strategic flexibility: the company adapts its global platforms to local markets. For Brazil, where compact pickups and biofuels are popular, the Corolla Cross with a cargo bed and a flexible-fuel PHEV makes logical sense. Meanwhile, in the US, where the Ford Maverick dominates, Toyota will likely create a larger vehicle based on the RAV4 to meet local payload and comfort requirements. Thus, the company avoids direct copying but remains in the game in both key regions.
