Volkswagen presented the Tukan pickup prototype for Brazil
Volkswagen has unveiled a prototype of the compact pickup Tukan, which is being developed for the Brazilian market and other South American countries. The bright camouflage, adorned with VW logos, the Brazilian flag, a soccer ball, and other patriotic elements, hides details but allows assessing the proportions. A short hood, double-cab layout, and compact rear overhang give the vehicle the silhouette of an SUV that has received a cargo bed.
Design and exterior features
Up front, sharp LED headlights are installed, combined with a bumper grille featuring a honeycomb pattern borrowed from the European T-Roc. Square wheel arches, muscular fenders, significant ground clearance, and roof rails that smoothly transition into a sport bar complete the look. On the tailgate, the inscription Tukan is visible, inspired by the toucan bird. Also noticeable is the yellow color Canary Yellow, which matches the first teaser from February 2026.
Chassis and technical platform
The Tukan pickup is built on a modified version of the MQB platform, sharing components with the T-Cross model. However, the pickup received a special rear suspension, consisting of a solid axle and semi-elliptic leaf springs. This is a departure from the torsion beam and coil springs used in the aging Saveiro, and follows the example of the competitor Fiat Strada, which prioritizes payload capacity over handling.
Powertrains
Volkswagen has not yet confirmed engine options, but it is expected that the small truck will be equipped with a mild-hybrid version of the turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder TSI engine. The lineup may also include a non-electrified turbocharged 1.0-liter engine for entry-level trims, allowing them to be offered at a lower price.
Presentation and connection to soccer
The camouflaged prototype first appeared in public at an event in Rio de Janeiro, timed to the announcement of the Brazil national team squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. It was photographed alongside head coach Carlo Ancelotti and the team’s mascot Canarinho.
Production plans and competitors
A full presentation is expected during the tournament this summer, as VW is a sponsor of the Brazil national team. The market launch will take place a few months after that. The Tukan is one of 21 new VW models planned for Latin America by 2028. It will be produced at the Volkswagen plant in São José dos Pinhais, Paraná, with approximately 76% local content. The main competitors in the segment are the Fiat Strada and Toro, Chevrolet Montana, and the upcoming Renault Niagara.
This move by Volkswagen demonstrates a strategic return to the compact pickup segment in South America, where demand for such vehicles remains high. The use of the MQB platform with an adapted rear suspension indicates an attempt to find a balance between passenger car comfort and truck practicality. The connection with the Brazil national football team is a powerful marketing move that should ensure high recognition of the new model among the target audience. Given the company’s aggressive plans to expand its model lineup in the region, the Tukan could become an important player in the market, challenging established leaders such as the Fiat Strada.
