New Volkswagen Amarok for South America
Volkswagen is preparing a new version of the Amarok pickup specifically for the South American market. The model, which will debut in 2027, will be produced in Argentina on a platform from the Chinese company SAIC. Unlike the global Amarok version based on the Ford Ranger, this variant will receive a hybrid powertrain.
According to company representatives, the new Amarok is being developed in collaboration with SAIC and is likely to inherit many components from the Maxus Interstellar X model (also known as LDV Terron 9). Production will begin at the plant in General Pacheco, where Volkswagen has invested over 500 million dollars.
Technical Features and Design
The South American Amarok is expected to have dimensions similar to the Maxus Interstellar X: a length of approximately 5.5 meters and a wheelbase of 3.3 meters. The front-end design, however, will be unique to Volkswagen—a concept sketch shows an LED light bar, a compact radiator grille, and powerful bumpers.
“This pickup is being developed specifically for the needs of the South American markets and will not be available in other regions,” notes Volkswagen.
The hybrid version of the Amarok will be part of the general trend towards reducing emissions in the region. The model is positioned as a more eco-friendly alternative to conventional pickups, while maintaining high functionality.
A similar approach is already used by Stellantis, which offers several pickups based on Chinese platforms. Volkswagen appears to be following the same path, hoping to reduce development and production costs through collaboration with SAIC. This will allow the company to focus on other markets where the traditional Amarok will remain the main offering.
