New Fully Electric Crossover from MG Could Become the Brand’s Best Model

The Chinese automaker MG has introduced a new model – the MG4X electric crossover, which expands the MG4 family. The main feature of the novelty is the use of an advanced semi-solid-state battery pack.

Technological Basis

The new MG4X crossover, similar to the MG4 hatchback, has received an advanced semi-solid-state battery pack. The 53.95 kWh battery installed between the axles contains only 5% liquid electrolyte, which defines it as semi-solid-state. This chemical composition improves thermal stability and allows it to operate effectively in extreme cold and heat, providing a decent range despite the compact size of the battery itself.

The new model uses the same E3 electric architecture as the updated MG4 hatchback and is intended to be the brand’s answer to the BYD Atto 2.

Currently, details about the powertrain output of the MG4X remain unknown. There is no information about either power or the number of electric motors.

Dimensions and Design

The MG4X has a length of 4395 mm, a width of 1842 mm, a height of 1551 mm, and a wheelbase of 2750 mm. The vehicle’s mass is 1485 kg. Visually, the crossover has inherited features from the hatchback but has received its own unique style.

The front end looks quite massive due to large air intakes and a lower grille. Triangular headlights with a thin LED strip complement the look. The first images also show black side mirrors, a large panoramic glass roof, and sharp rear lights, whose shape resembles the higher-positioned MG S5 model in the brand’s lineup.

Interior Expectations

The interior of the MG4X has not yet been presented, but it is likely to inherit a number of solutions from the hatchback. This may concern the central infotainment display, developed in collaboration with smartphone manufacturer Oppo. It is also expected that the interior will retain physical buttons on the steering wheel and center console, which will avoid excessive minimalism and improve ergonomics.

The appearance of the MG4X with a semi-solid-state battery indicates an acceleration of the technological race among affordable electric vehicles. The ability to provide over 500 km of range from a relatively small battery could become a serious advantage in the market, especially in regions with temperature fluctuations. The success of this model among buyers will largely depend on the final price and detailed information about dynamic characteristics, which are still not disclosed. Competition with the BYD Atto 2 promises to be fierce, which could ultimately lead to more affordable and technologically advanced electric cars for a wide range of consumers.
