New BYD Great Tang Off-Roader Challenges European Auto Giants

New Flagship SUV from BYD

The Chinese automaker BYD has introduced its new flagship electric SUV named the Great Tang. This model, despite its somewhat unusual name, is built on the company’s latest electric platform and is positioned as a response to premium off-roaders such as the Zeekr 9X and IM LS9, as well as traditional European and Asian competitors, including the Volvo EX90 and Hyundai Ioniq 9.

The model is distinguished by its large dimensions, even surpassing the Denza B8. Its length reaches 5,302 mm, width — 1,999 mm, height — up to 1,800 mm, and the wheelbase is 3,130 mm. The Great Tang is part of BYD’s new premium Dynasty series.

Key Features and Technologies

The exterior of the Great Tang looks stylish, especially in the two-tone red and silver paint. The front end shares common features with other BYD models, including an LED light bar, a black lower grille, and vertical headlights harmoniously integrated into the front fascia.

Advanced Electric Technologies

The most important aspect of the Great Tang is not its design, but its technical underpinnings. The model is built on the new Super e platform and equipped with the second-generation Blade battery. These cells are compatible with new 1,500 kW charging stations, and the model itself uses a 1000-volt architecture.

BYD recently announced that the cells can charge from 10 to 97 percent in just nine minutes.

The exact battery capacity has not been disclosed, but it is known that single-motor versions with 402 and 496 hp will be available. For those seeking more power, a dual-motor version with 784 hp is offered. Despite its large size and weight of up to 2,970 kg, the rear-wheel-drive version has a CLTC range of up to 950 km. The dual-motor version has a range of approximately 850 km.

Interior and Comfort

The Great Tang’s cabin features a 2+2+3 seating layout and is equipped with all possible luxury amenities. Among the features are a large central multimedia screen, individual screens for the driver and passenger, wireless phone chargers, a refrigerator, and a screen that descends from the ceiling for rear-row passengers.

In China, prices for the model are expected to start from over 400,000 yuan, which is approximately 58,000 US dollars.

The arrival of the Great Tang on the market could significantly shake the positions of existing premium electric vehicles, offering a competitive combination of technology, space, and range. Fast charging, especially considering the development of corresponding infrastructure, could become one of the most important advantages for potential buyers who value time and convenience. The success of this model will also show how ready the global audience is to accept Chinese cars in the high-end segment, traditionally dominated by European and American brands.
