New Hongqi SUV prioritizes power over appearance

New Hongqi G919 SUV: power above all else

While some Chinese brands create very attractive cars, Hongqi models are not always the most desirable. A prime example is their new G919 SUV, which stands out with its massive grille that, to put it mildly, does not add to its aesthetics.

Despite this, the new model was already presented at the recent Beijing Auto Show, and new images have now emerged. More and more Chinese manufacturers are entering the SUV market due to high demand, and Hongqi has decided not to be left behind. Although the design leaves something to be desired, the G919 does have certain advantages.

Technical specifications and dimensions

The vehicle has a length of 202.1 inches (5135 mm), a width of 80.7 inches (2050 mm), and a height of 76.7 inches (1950 mm), with a wheelbase of 114.1 inches (2900 mm). The G919 is built on a traditional ladder frame, a key feature for a true off-road SUV. Hongqi has also equipped the model with mechanical front and rear differential locks, as well as air suspension. Like the Mercedes G-Class, it features a central differential lock.

Supercar power

The G919’s powertrain is an EREV (Extended Range Electric Vehicle). It combines a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with four electric motors, together producing 831 hp (620 kW) and 973 lb-ft (1320 Nm) of torque. While the exact battery capacity is unknown, the claimed all-electric range is 174 miles (280 km), with a total range of 839 miles (1350 km).

Of course, no one needs such extreme power in an SUV, but it is nice to have it. Furthermore, thanks to a separate electric motor on each wheel, the G919 provides precise torque vectoring to maintain traction in any conditions. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes an impressive 4.5 seconds.

Price and availability

Details regarding pricing have not yet been announced. It is only known that the G919 is expected to go on sale in the coming months.

This SUV from Hongqi showcases an interesting trend in the Chinese market: the combination of a classic ladder frame with a cutting-edge hybrid powertrain. While the exterior design may be controversial, the G919’s technical specifications, especially its power and off-road capabilities, make it a serious player in its segment. It remains to be seen whether the brand can offer a competitive price to attract buyers looking for an unconventional alternative to traditional models like the Land Rover Defender or Mercedes G-Class.
