New Subaru Off-Road Vehicle for $35,000 Abandons All-Wheel Drive

Subaru has announced details about its new affordable electric vehicle – the Uncharted crossover for the 2026 model year. The car will go on sale early next year with a starting price of $34,995. This positioning makes it the brand’s most affordable electric model, significantly cheaper than the Solterra and the upcoming Trailseeker.

Affordability and Base Trim

The base version is called the Uncharted Premium FWD. This is the first front-wheel-drive Subaru to be sold in the US in decades. Its design is very similar to the Toyota C-HR. Standard equipment includes LED lighting, rain sensors, a power-operated rear liftgate, 8.2 inches of ground clearance, and 18-inch alloy wheels.

The minimalist interior features a 7-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14-inch multimedia system with support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Also included are wireless charging for two smartphones, heated front seats, 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, and a six-speaker audio system.

The EyeSight safety system is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, cross-traffic alert, lane departure prevention, road sign recognition assist, and emergency steering assist.

Base Model Technical Specifications

The vehicle is equipped with a 74.7 kWh battery and a front electric motor producing 221 horsepower. The stated range exceeds 300 miles. Using the NACS connector and fast charging, the battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in approximately 28 minutes.

Sport Trim with All-Wheel Drive

The Uncharted Sport version will start at $39,795. It features roof rails, an upgraded interior with StarTex upholstery, a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, 8-way power-adjustable passenger seat, and driver’s seat memory. Additional driver assistance systems are also added, such as lane change assist, traffic jam assist, and a 360-degree camera.

The main news for the Sport trim is the all-wheel-drive transmission with two motors producing a combined 338 horsepower. The range decreases only slightly – to over 285 miles.

Top GT Version

The most expensive Uncharted GT trim will have a starting price of $43,795. It features a panoramic glass roof, 20-inch wheels, and an optional two-tone paint job. The interior gains heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a premium 11-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, and a digital rearview mirror. The range for this heavier and more equipped version is estimated at over 270 miles.

Pricing Policy

The manufacturer has published the MSRP for all three trims:

A destination charge of $1,450 or $1,600 must be added to these amounts.

The launch of the Subaru Uncharted on the market could be an important step for the brand, which is traditionally associated with all-wheel drive. By offering an affordable front-wheel-drive base version, the company is targeting a wider range of buyers looking for an electric vehicle with a long range. At the same time, retaining the all-wheel-drive option in higher trims maintains a connection with the brand’s core image. The success of this model could significantly impact Subaru’s electric portfolio in North America, filling the niche between the Solterra and more expensive off-road vehicles.
