Updated Toyota Corolla Cross and Frontlander for the Chinese Market
Compact crossovers remain key models for global automakers. In China, Toyota offers two similar models: the Corolla Cross from FAW Toyota and the Frontlander from GAC Toyota. Both are preparing for a facelift that will bring an updated design and retain familiar technical specifications.
New versions have already appeared in the documents of China’s Ministry of Industry, allowing for an assessment of the changes before the official release. The Frontlander has received an original front-end design, reminiscent of European models but with more aerodynamic elements. The body has remained practically unchanged, but an interior update is expected.
Technical Features
The dimensions of the Frontlander are 4,490 mm in length, 1,825 mm in width, and 1,625 mm in height, which is practically identical to the Corolla Cross. Both models will offer a 2.0-liter gasoline engine (169 hp) and a hybrid version (156 hp + electric motor).
The Corolla Cross has become one of Toyota’s most successful models, with sales of 859,000 units in 2024 — 18% more than the previous year.
The updated versions are expected to go on sale soon, as indicated by price reductions for current models. In China, the base gasoline Frontlander starts from ¥89,800 (~$12,500), and the hybrid version starts from ¥111,800 (~$15,600).
Despite the success of the Corolla Cross, it still lags behind the RAV4 in sales, which remains the global leader. The update of the Chinese models could strengthen their positions in the local market, where competition among crossovers remains high. Manufacturers continue to adapt design and technologies to the preferences of local buyers, which is especially noticeable in the case of the Frontlander with its unique front end.
