The New RAV4 Became More Capable, and the CX-5 Became More Premium. Which Model is Right for You?

New Generations of Toyota RAV4 and Mazda CX-5: A Comparison

This year, buyers of compact crossovers received two updated Japanese cars – the Toyota RAV4 and the Mazda CX-5. Both models have undergone a full update, receiving new design, technology, and improved characteristics.

So far, both cars have not yet undergone full tests, but already now it is possible to compare their main parameters based on official data.

Exterior: Different Approaches

The design of the new Mazda CX-5 has become more sporty, with a low stance and smooth lines, consistent with the signature Kodo style. In contrast, the Toyota RAV4 has received sharper contours, straight lines, and a high front end, giving it a more “off-road” appearance.

Toyota offers three styling variants for the RAV4: Core, Woodland, and GR Sport, while Mazda has limited itself to more restrained differences between trim levels.

Interior and Technology

The interiors of both models have been updated to meet modern requirements. Toyota has installed a 12.9-inch multimedia screen with the Arene system, while Mazda has gone even further – a 15.6-inch display based on Google. Both crossovers are aimed at family buyers, but Mazda is trying to get closer to the premium segment through higher-quality materials.

Technical Features

The 2026 Toyota RAV4 will receive exclusively hybrid powertrains, while the Mazda CX-5 will initially be released with a gasoline engine, and a hybrid version will appear only in 2027. The most powerful RAV4 Prime version produces 320 hp, while the base Mazda currently offers 187 hp.

Sales of these models remain high: in 2024, the RAV4 became the world’s best-selling car with over 1.1 million units, while the CX-5 sold 345 thousand copies. It is expected that the new generations will only strengthen the positions of both models in the market.

Prices for the updated versions have not yet been announced, but if we focus on previous models, the cost could start from $28-29 thousand. The new Toyota RAV4 is expected to go on sale by the end of 2025, and the Mazda CX-5 – at the beginning of 2026.

The updated versions of the two popular crossovers demonstrate different approaches to design and technical content, giving buyers the opportunity to choose a car that best suits their needs. It is worth noting that both models remain on their platforms, receiving only modernization, not a complete change in design.
