In 2027, the updated Renault Duster debuted on the Indian market. The SUV received an updated exterior and interior, three powertrain options, including a hybrid, but remained exclusively front-wheel drive. Prices in India start from $11,400 USD.
Official Launch and Updated Design
Renault officially unveiled the new Duster in India, confirming local prices and trim details. The car’s overall silhouette remained recognizable, but the French brand gave it a fresh look with details adapted for the local market and a more refined cabin, aiming to stand out in the saturated SUV segment.
Visually, the Indian Duster differs from global versions thanks to a series of external changes. The headlight units retained their housing, but the light signature lost the global Y-shaped theme in favor of a simpler LED composition.
The radiator grille now features a bold Duster inscription, and the front bumper gained a more aggressive look with a large aluminum-look skid plate and enlarged side intakes. The side profile doesn’t differ much, but the front doors now feature grilles with the Renault logo instead of a plastic insert, and the D-pillars have a vertical slit.
At the rear, the taillights retained their triangular shape but are now tinted with updated graphics. The tailgate received a new LED light strip, as well as a redesigned license plate recess and a corresponding bumper shape.
A More Premium Cabin
If the exterior resembles a mid-lifecycle update, the interior tells a different story. Renault completely redesigned the cabin layout, added more features, and updated key touchpoints for a more refined feel. This is emphasized by a modern digital instrument cluster, ambient lighting, and leatherette upholstery in top trims.
Indian buyers can choose between six trim levels: Authentic, Evolution, Techno, Techno+, Iconic, and the pictured Iconic Launch Edition.
The base Authentic trim lacks an infotainment display, but the Evolution gets a 10.1-inch touchscreen paired with a 7-inch digital instrument cluster and a six-speaker Arkamys audio system. The Techno adds features like a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone climate control, and wireless charging, making it a very attractive proposition.
For those wanting the best, the flagship Iconic has a larger 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a built-in Google package with voice control and native navigation for the 10.1-inch infotainment system, as well as electrically adjustable and ventilated front seats.
Renault also emphasizes practicality: the Duster offers 518 liters of boot space, which can be expanded to 700 liters if loaded up to the roof.
Powertrains Cover the Basics
The new model is based on the Renault CMF-B modular platform, already used globally. The Indian Duster received three powertrain options, all front-wheel drive.
The base engine is a turbocharged 1.0-liter three-cylinder producing 99 hp, paired with a six-speed manual transmission. Next is a 1.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder producing 158 hp, combined with a six-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission. At the top of the range is a self-charging hybrid setup based on a 1.8-liter gasoline engine and two electric motors, delivering a combined output of 158 hp.
However, there is no all-wheel-drive option. Unlike its European counterpart, the Indian Duster remains strictly front-wheel drive, which may limit its appeal to off-road enthusiasts.
Aggressive Pricing and High Demand for the Hybrid
The 2026 Renault Duster enters the Indian market with a starting price of 10.49 lakh rupees ($11,400 USD) for the base Authentic trim with the 1.0L turbo engine and manual gearbox.
At the other end of the spectrum, the flagship Iconic Launch Edition with the turbocharged 1.3-liter engine and dual-clutch automated manual transmission costs 18.29 lakh rupees ($19,800 USD). For context, this is the starting price of the European Dacia Duster in its base configuration.
If you’re wondering why there’s no price for the hybrid, it’s because it’s already sold out for the entire year. Company representatives acknowledged that since January 26th, when pre-orders began, the response to the hybrid Duster has been “overwhelming,” and they are now working to increase production capacity to reopen the order books.
Unlike global versions produced in Romania and Turkey, the Indian Duster will be manufactured locally at Renault’s plant in Chennai. The company claims a 90% localization level, meaning almost all components are sourced from India, not imported as CKD kits.
In India, the Duster will enter direct competition with segment leaders such as the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Skoda Kushaq, Volkswagen Taigun, MG Astor, and the upcoming closely related Nissan Tekton.
The rapid sell-out of the hybrid version even before the official sales launch vividly demonstrates the growing demand for efficient and eco-friendly technologies even in the budget segment. The Duster’s success in India could also serve as a test for Renault regarding the potential return of this model to other markets in a similar guise, with a focus on high localization levels and aggressive pricing to compete with numerous rivals.
