A new stylish SUV from Isuzu you’ve never heard of

Isuzu introduced an improved version of the TFR pickup since 1988.

Dragon Max is equipped with LED lights, 17-inch wheels, and lowered suspension.

The unique vehicle is equipped with a tuned turbo diesel producing 217 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque.

For classic truck enthusiasts, Isuzu unveiled a retro-inspired concept that proves old-fashioned charm still has a place in the modern automotive world. And they did it in style — bringing a fan-favorite from the late ’80s back to life with a touch that doesn’t stop at appearances.

It’s called Dragon Max and it looks like a modern restomod version of the mid-size TFR truck from this brand since 1988. This concept features updated styling, a new turbo diesel engine, and a fully revamped interior, giving the old platform a second life.

Dragon was a local nickname for the Isuzu TFR, a model that had many faces in various markets around the world. Depending on where you lived, this truck might have been branded as Faster, Rodeo, Pickup, Invader, or even Honda Ippon. It also appeared under Opel, Vauxhall, Holden, and . The first year of 1988, this generation lasted until 2002 when it was eventually replaced in the first year of .

More:

Dragon Max leaves most of the original TFR body design almost unchanged, but updates the exterior with some key touches. New LED headlights and smoked tail lights give it a modern look, while the shiny grille frame and matte paint job firmly place it in the 2025 year. The rear spoiler adds a sporty tilt, and the black 17-inch wheels, along with a revised suspension, lower the vehicle into the low-rise range.

The approach is not very different from what Hyundai did a few years ago — modern technology and style added to a familiar silhouette.

Isuzu Thailand did not skimp on materials. Most of the interior plastics have been replaced with Alcantara, with added carbon trim and leather inserts on the seats. Since the concept is based on the elevated cab type Space Cab version, there is some space behind the front seats, as well as a size-tailored body on the back to carry what retro truck enthusiasts transport these days.

Adequate power update

The most significant upgrades are mechanical. At the core of Dragon Max lies Isuzu’s 2.2-liter MaxForce turbo diesel engine, the same modern unit recently .

According to , the engine is tuned to produce 217 hp (162 kW / 220 PS) and 550 Nm (406 lb-ft) of torque. That’s a jump of 57 hp and 150 Nm compared to the standard specification, and more than double the power of the original TFR. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a modern eight-speed automatic transmission, quite fitting for a truck that’s part time machine, part tech showcase.

Dragon Max was unveiled at the Bangkok International Motor Show (BIMS), where it captivated exhibition visitors. To accompany the presentation, Isuzu released a vintage-themed video that hits the mark. You can watch it below.
