Updated BMW X1: New design, but old platform
BMW is preparing an update for its compact crossover X1. Instead of a complete generational change, the automaker has decided to conduct a facelift of the current model. This means the car will get a fresh exterior look but retain the familiar technical underpinnings.
New “face” in Neue Klasse style
BMW has already introduced several models as part of its Neue Klasse series, with more new products on the horizon. Among them is the updated X1, which was spotted testing several months ago, and now it has been shown in detail in renders.
The Bavarian automaker is not working on an entirely new generation of the X1, but only on a facelift of the current one. The changes will not be as significant as those on other new BMW models. Nevertheless, these renders depict the crossover with a fully redesigned front end, which, at least in our opinion, makes it slightly more attractive than the current model, although it is unlikely to win any beauty contests.
As with the iX3 and the new i3 sedan, the crossover will get new vertical kidney grilles. On either side of them are glossy black elements that smoothly transition into redesigned LED headlights with daytime running lights similar to those used on other BMW models. The lower part of the front bumper will also be very different, featuring new air intakes with black surrounds and possibly black air curtains.
Minimal changes to the profile and rear
Since this is only a facelift, no major changes are expected to the profile — the door panels and handles will remain unchanged. It is difficult to say exactly how many changes will be made to the rear of the new X1, although spy shots taken earlier this year suggest that it will have taillights similar to the current model.
Nevertheless, the LED signature of the taillights will be changed. A new bumper is also expected, possibly with a large number of contrasting black details, as shown in these renders from Kolesa.
Familiar technical foundation
It is important to note that although the X1 will receive some Neue Klasse design features, it will not be built on the Neue Klasse platform. Instead, it will remain on the current FAAR platform, meaning the same set of engines should be expected: 1.5-liter, 2.0-liter, and 3.0-liter gasoline units. Hybrid versions will also be available in some markets.
Thus, the updated X1 will become a kind of “bridge” between BMW’s current model lineup and the future electrified Neue Klasse. It will offer a fresh, more aggressive front-end design that visually brings it closer to new models, while retaining the time-tested platform and engines. This will allow BMW to offer customers an updated product without significant development costs for an entirely new model, which is a pragmatic solution in the context of a gradual transition to new technologies. For buyers who value proven mechanics but want a car with a modern appearance, this approach may be the optimal compromise.
