Peugeot 301 – money down the drain or a decent car?

The budget model Peugeot 301 shares the platform and body with its sibling, the Citroen C-Elysée sedan, but looks more harmonious, even though its style is without any special frills. The interior is also simple, if not plain, with differences from the Citroen only in a different set of decorative elements and a steering wheel with a different hub.

Currently, the Peugeot 301 is sold with a 1.2 gasoline “three” (72 hp) and a 1.6 turbo diesel (92 hp). The traction of three cylinders is not enough for a one-and-a-half-ton sedan, so the diesel seems more preferable, despite the higher price of the car with such an engine. The only advantage of the gasoline version is the possibility of ordering a robotic transmission, while the diesel is exclusively equipped with “mechanics”.

The budget aspect in the interior is not obvious but visible: hard plastic, a simple instrument panel, monochrome displays of the onboard computer, and the standard stereo. On the move, the car is ambiguous: the sedan responds to steering with reluctance, and the body leans in turns are significant, but the suspension swallows almost any flaws in the road surface without hesitation. In short, it is a decent workhorse without claims to pedigree.

The sedan was not created for sale in Europe, so it showed mediocre results in EuroNCAP tests: 71 points out of 100, which is equivalent to a three-star rating. Basic equipment is sparse: driver’s airbag and ABS.

Additional airbags (front passenger and front side) appear in the mid-level Active configuration, but even with extra payment, there is no chance to get stabilization systems, let alone more advanced electronic aids like blind spot monitoring.

A lot of cars for your money — that’s precisely about the Peugeot 301. In the literal sense. For rear-seat space, the sedan outdoes most direct competitors. As well as in trunk volume and its convenience of transformation: 506 liters plus a folding rear seat.

Simple, but not dull, with a comfortable suspension and a torquey diesel engine. As a result, a pretty good car in its class in terms of the balance of consumer qualities.

The Peugeot 301 has a very economical diesel: the passport consumption in the combined cycle is 4.3 l/100 km, and in real life, it is only slightly higher — just over five liters per “hundred”. The appetite of the gasoline version 1.2 is comparable to that of the now-discontinued 1.6 (115 hp) version — 8.5 l/100 km in urban mode compared to the manufacturer-stated 7.0 l/100 km. All because the small engine has to be revved more.

You can buy the updated Peugeot 301 in Ukraine for a price starting from 300,000 UAH, making this budget sedan one of the most affordable on the market.
