Unique Acura NSX and Auction Drama Due to a Mistake
A rare Acura NSX found itself at the center of an auction scandal due to a bidding mistake that cost an extra $100,000. The incident occurred on the Bring A Trailer platform, where one participant accidentally entered the wrong amount, leading to real drama among collectors.
The vehicle in question is a unique 2005 Acura NSX-T with only 4,200 miles (6,759 km) on the odometer and a six-speed manual transmission. The car features Rio Yellow Pearl paint with a yellow leather interior. According to sources, Acura produced only six such cars in this specification, which partially explains the subsequent events.
A $100,000 Mistake
The auction started standardly: bids rose from $42,000 to over $200,000, and then continued climbing to serious collector sums. Things got interesting at around the $293,000 mark. That’s when one participant suddenly placed a bid of $394,000.
Almost immediately after this, a comment appeared:
“Mistake, $294,000”
— the participant wrote.
At this stage, many accused the participant of collusion or being under the influence of alcohol. On Bring A Trailer, bids go through a two-step process to prevent such situations. Commenters believed the participant was trying to use this amount to gain exclusive negotiation rights with the seller or to stop the clock. However, the mistake is understandable: $294,000 and $394,000 differ by just one digit on the keyboard.
How Bring A Trailer Resolved the Situation
Instead of simply restarting the auction, the platform did not comment on the situation for several days. According to the site’s head of auctions, the company recognized the bid as erroneous and worked with the participants privately. The seller was offered options: resume bidding or negotiate with the affected participants.
Ultimately, the car was sold to another participant for $310,000, but this also sparked controversy. Auctions should operate under uniform rules for everyone. If there were several participants around the $200,000 mark, the private resolution raises questions: what about the others? However, there is a positive side: if you ever accidentally make a mistake on a six-figure bid on Bring A Trailer, you likely won’t have to explain it to your accountant.
This case shows how complex online auctions for rare cars can be. Even a single mistake can change the course of bidding and affect all participants. Although the platform tried to resolve the situation fairly, private negotiations leave room for discussion about the transparency of such processes. For collectors, this is a reminder of the importance of attentiveness, as even a small typo can cost tens of thousands of dollars.
