Xiaomi has canceled a software update that limited the power of the SU7 Ultra electric car from 1548 hp to 888 hp.
Previously, owners had to set a qualification time on the track to unlock the car’s full performance.
The 60-second wait before activating the launch control function for this Porsche Taycan competitor has also been removed.
Have you ever updated your phone or computer and immediately regretted it, wishing you could go back to the previous version? That’s exactly what happened to Chinese SU7 Ultra owners who lost about 650 hp after an update.
The Ultra is the flagship model in Xiaomi’s extremely successful SU7 lineup. This competitor to the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT costs four times less, but thanks to its triple motor setup with a power of 1526 hp (1548 hp / 1138 kW), it significantly surpasses the German car.
Owners were outraged when software version 1.7.0 reduced the power to approximately 888 hp (900 hp / 662 kW) if they could not prove their readiness for full power. To unlock it, it was necessary to show a qualification time on a track approved by Xiaomi, recorded by the built-in lap time scoring system.
The update also forced a full 60-second wait before activating launch control, which eliminated the possibility of a quick start at a traffic light, despite the potential to accelerate to 96 km/h in 1.89 seconds.
Xiaomi explained the limitations of version 1.7.0 by citing safety concerns, stating that maximum performance is intended only for the track and experienced drivers. However, many owners complained that they received a car with less capability than advertised.
After a wave of outrage, the company reversed its decision, canceling the restrictions and promising greater transparency in future updates.
“We value our community’s feedback and guarantee greater openness going forward,” a company representative stated.
Do you think Xiaomi was right to require drivers to confirm their skills to access the SU7’s full power?
