Updated 2027 Range Rover goes electric, but its BMW V8 engine remains in service

Updated 2027 Range Rover: First Spy Photos and Key Changes

The full-size Range Rover is preparing for an update, and a heavily camouflaged prototype has already been spotted during tests on the Nürburgring track. While it may seem strange to test a large luxury SUV on a racing circuit, this track is an important proving ground for refining the handling of almost every new car, and the Range Rover is no exception.

Electric Version: The Main Event

The most important addition to the Range Rover lineup for the 2027 model year will be the launch of a fully electric version. The British brand has been working on this model for quite some time. In addition to being the first Range Rover sold as an electric vehicle, it will bring with it several updates that will be implemented across all other internal combustion engine and hybrid versions.

Exterior Changes: A Cautious Approach

Like the test sample we photographed during winter trials earlier this year, the front of the car is hidden by camouflage and black covering to conceal significant updates. We suspect that the upper grille will undergo changes, as well as likely the lower grille and air intakes. The headlights are also expected to be redesigned.

When viewed from the rear, this prototype has very few differences from the current model. It is clear that the update will be very restrained. Minor changes may affect the bumper, tailgate, and rear lights.

Interior: New Display and Physical Buttons

Our spy photographers have not yet managed to take high-quality shots of the updated Range Rover interior, but it is believed to receive a new curved infotainment display while retaining a sufficient number of physical controls. It is quite likely that the new Range Rover Velar, which is also in development, will share many interior details with the Range Rover.

Powertrains: Hybrids, PHEVs, and EVs

A wide range of powertrains is expected to be available. Among the options offered for the current model are 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engines with mild hybrid and plug-in hybrids, ranging from 395 hp to 550 hp for the flagship six-cylinder P550e model. Each plug-in hybrid currently relies on a 38.2 kWh battery pack, which could be increased to extend electric range.

Models using the twin-turbo V8 from BMW are also expected to remain available, offering up to 607 hp in the current Range Rover. Several diesel variants are also expected to be retained after the update.

Thus, the updated 2027 Range Rover will be an important step for the brand, combining evolutionary design with a revolutionary shift to electric propulsion. The preservation of a wide choice of engines, including the powerful V8, testifies to Land Rover’s desire to meet the needs of different markets and buyers without abandoning traditional powertrains. The official presentation is expected before the end of the year, and then we will learn all the details about the technical specifications and prices.
