What is known about the new Volvo EX50
The Volvo EX40 currently starts at $56,545 and remains a fairly unnoticed model. However, according to insider information, the Swedish brand is preparing a completely new car that may be called EX50.
The new model is promised to be much more affordable than its predecessor. The estimated price will start somewhere in the “upper $40,000s.” This will significantly increase the model’s appeal, because the current EX40 is only $3,250 cheaper than the larger EX60.
Earlier, information had already appeared about the successor to Volvo’s compact crossover, and dealers are not sure that this is the right priority for the brand.
Platform, production and target figures
According to Automotive News, the new entry-level crossover will arrive in autumn 2027. It will be based on the new SPA3 platform, already used in the EX60. Production will be organized at Volvo’s new Slovak plant. The company expects to sell about 10,000 such cars in the US in the first year. That would make the EX50 one of the most successful Volvos in America. However, the publication notes that European markets may be a priority.
What the new model will offer
Not much is known yet about the car itself. It is said that the EX50 will be longer and taller than the EX40. This should make it more convenient for American buyers. An 800-volt electrical architecture is also expected, which will provide faster charging.
A Volvo spokesperson, Thomas McIntyre Schultz, declined to comment on the specific model but added:
“We will continue to invest in expanding our electric vehicle lineup.”
The XC40 may stay with an update

Although the EX50 is intended to replace the EX40, the petrol version of the XC40 could continue its life. In June, spy photographers captured an updated version during testing in Spain.
The updated car received a new front end with changed radiator grille and redesigned headlights. A new bumper and a modified lower air intake also appeared.
At the rear, a different bumper and updated lights are noticeable. The model also has smaller, differently positioned reflectors.
The changes will also affect the interior. Judging by the pictures, the cabin will be redesigned in the style of the EX30. The most noticeable detail is a new portrait-oriented infotainment system that protrudes above the dashboard.

At the same time, the arrival of the EX50 could seriously change the balance of power in the compact electric crossover segment. Currently, in the US, the EX40 costs almost as much as the EX60, which puts buyers in a difficult choice. If the new model really is cheaper, bigger and more technologically advanced, it could become a major player in Volvo’s lineup. The decision to keep the XC40 on the assembly line indicates a cautious approach to the transition to electric vehicles — the brand is in no hurry to abandon buyers who are not yet ready for full electrification.
