Updated Mercedes-AMG CLE will dazzle with stars, but we are interested in the V8

Updated Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 and CLE 63 spotted during tests

Spy photographers managed to capture the updated version of the Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 during road tests in Europe. Along with it, a prototype was also spotted, which is likely the CLE 63, but not the exclusive Mythos version. This indicates that the twin-turbo V8 engine will also appear in the “traditional” modification.

Exterior changes and design

Mercedes is preparing a hardcore version of the CLE Mythos, which will become the spiritual successor to the CLK Black Series. However, this is not the only new item — the coupe and cabriolet will receive updates. It seems that the model may finally get a 63 version with a V8 engine.

Two AMG prototypes were recently spotted during tests in Europe, and they look quite aggressive. Since Mercedes decided to abandon restraint, the cars were equipped with headlights and taillights featuring a star pattern. These details will likely complement the new front bumper and a slightly modified radiator grille.

More about this: Mercedes-AMG CLE 63 could get a twin-turbo V8 engine.

At the rear, the blue CLE 53 prototype has the usual four exhaust pipes with round tips. It is complemented by a sportier rear bumper and an updated diffuser with only two fins.

Technical specifications and power

The other prototype is more notable as it has four square exhaust pipes. This is a characteristic feature of the 63 version, indicating that the V8 engine will not be limited solely to the ultra-expensive Mythos. Instead, it can be expected that the 63 version will receive a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 with around 577 hp (430 kW / 585 PS) and a torque of 590 lb-ft (799 Nm).

This will be a significant jump compared to the CLE 53, which has a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine producing 443 hp (330 kW / 449 PS) and a torque of 413 lb-ft (559 Nm). This allows the coupe to accelerate to 60 mph (96 km/h) in just four seconds.

As for the CLE Mythos, it is rumored to have a power output of around 637 hp (475 kW / 646 PS). This model will also have a significantly more aggressive body kit and may be limited to just 30 units.

Thus, the CLE lineup is expanding not only with a design update but also with the arrival of a more powerful V8 version, which was previously the prerogative of only the most expensive models. This indicates that Mercedes seeks to satisfy the demand for classic internal combustion engines even in the era of electrification, offering buyers a choice between moderate performance and true power.
