Updated Range Rover Launches Electric Crossover from a Plane, but V8 Fans Can Breathe a Sigh of Relief

Land Rover Unveils Electric Range Rover Sport at Goodwood Festival

Land Rover has publicly showcased the electric version of the Range Rover Sport for the first time during the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The new electric vehicle will join the existing lineup, which includes six-cylinder engines, a V8, and plug-in hybrid versions of this sporty SUV. Full technical specifications will be released later this year, likely alongside the model’s refresh.

Third Generation Gets an Update

The third generation of the Range Rover Sport is approaching the middle of its lifecycle, and the main novelty will be a new powertrain. Land Rover tested electric prototypes of the Range Rover Sport Electric on the track at Goodwood, promising that this zero-emission SUV will be “more dynamic and faster than ever” without sacrificing its off-road capabilities.

Martin Limpert, Managing Director of Range Rover, stated that the electric version will “redefine SUV performance” when it hits the market later this year.

Endurance Testing

During a private showing at the Goodwood festival last weekend, the company conducted a series of theatrical tests on the prototypes: one drove out of an airplane fuselage, another climbed a set of stairs, and a third was tested on the track. The goal was to demonstrate that the electric vehicle can perform the challenging tasks that its gasoline and diesel counterparts handle.

According to Land Rover, the SUV “integrates a suite of advanced technologies that deliver more power and torque, enhanced by a new chassis setup and audio sound, creating a driving experience that is as distinctive as it is visceral, on any terrain.”

Design and Updates

The prototypes shown at Goodwood featured the body of the current Range Rover Sport, which has been on sale since 2022, but with new alloy wheels and special lighting projections for electric vehicles. The production version will likely look different when it reaches customers.

Our spy photographers recently spotted a camouflaged prototype of the updated Range Rover Sport at the Nürburgring, which featured different bumpers, modified LEDs, and other minor design changes. The update is also expected to bring improved technology inside the cabin.

Technical Specifications and Future

Although the automaker declined to reveal the power output of the electric powertrain, it is expected to be similar to the 542 hp (550 PS / 405 kW) used in the Range Rover Electric. Full specifications will be released later in 2026, most likely alongside the model’s refresh itself.

In addition to the presentation of the zero-emission model, JLR confirmed that the Range Rover Sport lineup will continue to include six-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines, a mild-hybrid V8, and plug-in hybrid variants, maintaining the same set of powertrains as its predecessor.

Thus, the electrification of the Range Rover Sport is a logical step in JLR’s strategy, which involves a gradual transition to electric vehicles. However, the company is in no rush to abandon traditional engines, offering a wide choice of powertrains to meet different customer needs. Preserving off-road qualities and dynamics even in the electric version indicates that the brand aims to maintain its DNA despite the change in drive type. The updated Range Rover Sport is expected to become one of the most technologically advanced and powerful electric vehicles in its segment, combining luxury, performance, and environmental friendliness.
