Updated Tesla Model Y L for $61,990 gets an additional 18 centimeters and a third row of seats that will really come in handy

Tesla Model Y L: A more spacious crossover for the US market

Tesla has introduced a new version of the Model Y L in the US market — a lengthened modification of the popular crossover that takes a place above the standard model. This vehicle with an extended wheelbase appeared immediately after the discontinuation of the outdated Model X. It is aimed at families who found the optional third row of seats in the regular Model Y too cramped for comfortable use.

The Model Y L first appeared in China back in August 2025, but the American version is produced at the Gigafactory Texas plant. Externally, the lengthened body distinguishes it from the standard model, although the overall design remains unchanged.

Increased space

The main difference of the Model Y L is the wheelbase length of 119.7 inches (3,040 mm), which is 5.9 inches (150 mm) longer than the standard version. This allowed for the creation of a three-row cabin with six seats. The additional space between the axles and a slightly longer rear overhang increased the overall length of the vehicle by 6.9 inches (175 mm) — to 195.6 inches (4,968 mm).

Additionally, the roofline rose by 1.7 inches (43 mm) — to 65.7 inches (1,669 mm), providing more headroom. The maximum cargo volume reaches 89 cubic feet (2,520 liters), which is 15 cubic feet (425 liters) more than the regular Model Y. However, Tesla does not specify what this figure is when all six seats are in use.

Exterior and Launch Series equipment

Along with redesigned body panels, larger rear doors, a pronounced rear spoiler, and enlarged windows, Tesla has added a new paint color called Cosmic Silver. Currently, the Model Y L is available only in the AWD Premium Launch Series version, which features 19- or 20-inch alloy wheels with staggered tires, adaptive damping, and retuned suspension.

Launch Series interior

Equipment includes a 16-inch central display, an 8-inch touchscreen for rear passengers, and a 19-speaker audio system. Heated and ventilated seats for the first and second rows are also provided, as well as heating and electric reclining adjustment for the third-row seats. Additionally, the limited Launch Series gets door lighting, suede dashboard trim, floor mats, branded sill plates, and special badges.

Regarding safety, the company has installed additional side airbags for third-row passengers. The Model Y L is also equipped with Full Self-Driving Supervised, blind spot monitoring, front cameras, and integrated Grok artificial intelligence.

Range and performance

Tesla estimates the range of the dual-motor all-wheel drive Model Y L Premium at 325 miles (523 km), which is only 2 miles (3 km) less than the equivalent Model Y Premium. When connected to a 250 kW fast charger, the electric vehicle can recover 164 miles (264 km) of range in 15 minutes. Performance is also impressive: acceleration from 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) takes 4.4 seconds, which is 0.2 seconds faster than the shorter version.

Price and availability

The Tesla Model Y L Premium Launch Series is already on sale for $61,990, which is $12,000 more expensive than the all-wheel drive Model Y Premium and $4,000 more than the Model Y Performance. Other versions of the lengthened electric vehicle are expected to appear in the future.

Outside the US, this long-wheelbase crossover is already sold in China, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Puerto Rico, with the United Arab Emirates next in line.

This move by Tesla is a logical continuation of the strategy to expand the Model Y lineup, which has already become one of the most popular electric vehicles in the world. Adding a lengthened version with a third row of seats allows the company to compete with models like the Kia EV9 or Rivian R1S, offering a more affordable yet still spacious option for large families. It is worth noting that the price of the Launch Series is quite high compared to the base Model Y, but it includes a significant list of equipment and technologies. Over time, as cheaper versions emerge, the Model Y L could become a serious player in the three-row crossover market, especially given its impressive range and performance.
