Volvo XC60 receives another update: what is known about the new prototype
Volvo XC60, despite its respectable age, remains the brand’s most popular model. Recently, a camouflaged prototype was spotted in Europe, indicating preparations for another update. This is interesting, as the last facelift occurred only for the 2026 model year.
The current second-generation XC60 debuted back in 2017. Since then, the model has undergone a minor update in 2021 and a more thorough facelift in 2025. This year, Volvo introduced the fully electric EX60, but the newcomer does not replace its gasoline counterpart in the lineup.
Exterior changes: new front-end design
Spy photographers captured a prototype in Spain with minimal camouflage. The front part has undergone significant changes: narrower headlights frame a more complex radiator grille. The bumper has also been updated — the triangular side air intakes characteristic of the previous version have disappeared.
The vehicle’s profile appears to have remained unchanged since 2017. At the rear, the Swedish manufacturer covered the LED taillights with black tape, which received longer horizontal elements on the updated rear bumper. The latter has a smaller license plate recess and a simpler design. Temporary exhaust pipe tips protrude from underneath.
Interior and technical innovations
The prototype’s dashboard is hidden, but no drastic changes are expected in the interior. The latest facelift already brought new materials, a larger 11.2-inch touchscreen, and a faster processor for the Google-based infotainment system.
The main news of this third update could be in the technical part. According to the latest data, Volvo is preparing the XC60 to comply with Euro 7 environmental standards.
There are rumors of a significantly redesigned hybrid powertrain that could provide an electric-only range of up to 200 km (124 miles). This should be taken with caution, but such a figure would be a significant leap from the current 82 km (51 miles), approaching the Chinese version of the XC70 with its range-extender engine.
Release timeline and production
The updated XC60 is expected to be presented in the first half of 2027. Currently, production of the model is established in Sweden and China, and from the end of 2026, the plant in Ridgeville, South Carolina, will join.
This step by Volvo demonstrates a pragmatic approach: instead of hastily replacing a successful model, the company continues to improve it, adapting to new environmental standards. The XC60 update could be an important signal for the market, showing that traditional internal combustion engines will remain relevant for a long time, especially in hybrid form. Increasing the electric range to 200 km will make this model practically an electric vehicle for daily commutes, significantly enhancing its competitiveness.
