Opel Omega EVO 500: how the fastest sedan of the 90s was created en

We’ve already told you about the unique model Lotus Omega, which was found in Ukraine in a few instances. In general, Omega was a very interesting car in this regard, from which they made all sorts of things. But the fastest modification is the Opel Omega EVO 500.Many people think that the EVO 500 is the handiwork of British masters from Lotus. However, this is not the case. Not at all!

Because Omega Evolution, on the contrary, is a response to the British by the Germans from the tuning studio Irmscher. The story goes that the numbers in the name denote the model’s circulation. But this does not mean that all five hundred copies were equipped with the same engine, and that there are indeed five hundred of them…Most of the produced Opel Omega EVO 500, namely 463 cars, were equipped with a 6-cylinder engine with 236 horsepower. Another 36 cars received a 4-liter Irmscher unit with 272 horsepower. If you calculate 463+36, there is a shortfall – 499, not 500 pieces.

How come? It’s simple – one instance of the Omega Evolution received a 24-valve engine with a volume of 3.6 liters. But that’s not all…The car was produced from 1991 to 1992, and although official data speaks of a circulation of 500 units, there is an opinion that the real total number of Evo500 produced is 321 units. This is because the company’s management quickly curtailed production due to low demand and high price (from 89 thousand German marks, at the top – more than 100 thousand).Externally, the EVO 500 differs with aerodynamic body kits with enlarged arches and a double spoiler (the second part automatically extends at high speeds). In addition, it should be noted that the Omega Evolution 500 was also produced in the DTM body kit.

The interior has a racing “flavor” in the form of bucket seats and another dashboard.Few people know, but in 1991 Omega Evolution 500 participated in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Despite its “family nature,” the car came 4th, losing to two BMW M3s and a Porsche 911. In addition, it was the Evo 500 that set a record (among 4-door cars) at the Nürburgring with a total time of 8:29.85, becoming the fastest sedan of the nineties. By the way, the characteristics of the Omega Evo indicate that the car has a fuel consumption in normal mode of 10.5 liters, on the track – 18-20 liters.

It is known that Lotus Omega can be found in Ukraine. More precisely, they were found.

One, according to our data, was or is in Dnipro. Another (or the same, it is not exactly known) was put up for sale in 2010 for a “ridiculous” amount of 3500 dollars. Perhaps the car’s condition is corresponding.Anyway, in Europe, you can buy an Opel Omega EVO 500 (if you’re lucky enough to find one) for 40-50 thousand euros or higher.
