Caterham Unveils Special Seven Edition for Miami Grand Prix
British manufacturer Caterham has decided to tie the release of a new limited edition of its legendary Seven sports car to the Miami Grand Prix weekend. This track-only car will be produced in just 12 examples worldwide, 10 of which are destined for the US market.
Unique Design and Exclusive Details
The Seven Miami Special Edition features a special Aqua color combined with bright pink and white stripes, adding vintage charm to the car. The words “Miami” adorn the side panels and rear, making it instantly clear who you are looking at.
The model is based on the Seven R version and is equipped with a 620-style nose cone featuring a white number 7 on the grille. The car also includes the Clear Lens package, powerful headlights, a full windshield, and 13-inch Apollo wheels in black with polished elements.
Interior and Safety
The open two-seater cabin includes a quick-release Momo leather steering wheel, carbon vinyl trim on the tunnel and boot cover, and “Miami” embroidery on the headrests. For track safety, a roll cage and a fire suppression system are installed.
Exclusivity is highlighted by two plaques: one on the dashboard indicates the individual production number, and another in the engine bay bears the signatures of the two British craftsmen who hand-assembled the car in Kent, UK.
Technical Specifications and Performance
Under the long hood is a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter Ford Duratec engine producing 210 hp (157 kW) and 203 Nm of torque. While these numbers may seem modest in the era of powerful electric vehicles, the car weighs just 560 kg—roughly half the weight of a base Mazda Miata. This results in a power-to-weight ratio of 375 hp per ton.
Power is sent to the rear wheels exclusively through a five-speed manual gearbox with sequential shift indicators. Performance is identical to the Seven R version: acceleration to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 3.8 seconds and a top speed of 219 km/h.
Debut and Availability
The Seven Miami Special Edition will be first shown to the public on May 1st on Race Street at the west campus of the Miami International Autodrome ahead of the race weekend. It is important to note that this model is not intended for public roads—owners will be able to enjoy it only on the track.
The launch coincides with the brand’s aggressive expansion in the US. Caterham has not yet announced the price, but given the rarity of the special edition, a significant premium is expected over the starting price of the standard Seven R at $51,995, which could be nearly double the cost of a Miata.
This special edition demonstrates how Caterham continues to find niche ways to draw attention to its classic model, blending a traditional approach to lightness and handling with modern marketing tactics. Although the car is not intended for daily use, it will become a desirable collector’s item for those who value uniqueness and thrilling track experiences. The limited production run and its ties to a prestigious racing event only enhance its appeal for wealthy enthusiasts.
