The last chance to buy gasoline-powered Porsche sports cars will disappear by early 2026

Discontinuation of the fourth-generation Porsche Boxster and Cayman

The fourth generation of the Porsche Boxster and Cayman, which have been in production for nearly a decade, will soon be phased out. Production of these models is scheduled to end in October of this year. Although some inventory remains in stock, supplies are dwindling rapidly.

The next, fifth generation of these models, which is expected to be electric, is facing technical challenges. Initially, the new Boxster and Cayman were anticipated to debut in 2026, but due to battery-related difficulties, their launch will likely be postponed until 2027.

“We have not yet announced a specific release date for the fully electric version,” stated a Porsche representative. “Following the electric Cayenne, Porsche will introduce electric sports cars in the 718 segment.”

Sales and the future of the models

As of now, approximately 60 new Boxster and Cayman units are available in the U.S., but deliveries may continue into early next year. This creates certain risks, as a significant gap may emerge between the discontinuation of the older models and the launch of the new ones.

In 2024, sales of the 718 series increased by 26%, demonstrating their enduring popularity even after many years on the market. However, due to shifts in the electric vehicle market, Porsche is considering adding internal combustion engines to models originally planned as fully electric.

Despite the delays, the company remains confident in its strategy of transitioning to electric technology. However, how long enthusiasts will have to wait for the new models remains unclear. Market demands and technical challenges may continue to influence Porsche’s plans for future sports cars.
