It’s interesting to write about rare and expensive cars sold at auctions, but for most of us, these cars are beyond our financial means. Fortunately, Mecum is now holding an online sale in which we can all participate by purchasing no less than 113 interesting die-cast car models from various eras. Whether you’re a Ferrari fan or just want to own a scale model of a 1970s sports car — there’s something here for everyone.
The die-cast models are primarily presented in 1:18 and 1:24 scales, many of them from The Franklin Mint, a manufacturer of collectibles from Pennsylvania. Among the offerings, you will find a Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa, a 1963 Corvette Sting Ray, a 1935 Mercedes 500 K Special Roadster, and a 1931 Bugatti Royale De Ville. If you’re more into classic American muscle cars, you can acquire a 1970 Plymouth Hemicuda or a 1957 Cadillac Eldorado, to name just a few.
Don’t think these models are nearly unattainable in price — most of them are currently selling for less than $100, and some have minimum bids of just $11. It’s one way to own a miniature version of a high-end classic car without having to mortgage your house.
There are also dozens of other die-cast models from various manufacturers. One that caught our eye is a 1:18 scale Chevrolet Corvette from AUTOart, still in its box. I have an AUTOart Lamborghini Murcielago SV model on my desk and I can confirm their quality. At the time of writing, it had a high bid of $46.
Other 1:18 scale models from brands like Bburango, Maisto, and American Muscle are also up for sale. Some of them haven’t received any bids yet and can be acquired quite cheaply. There is also a 1:18 scale Ferrari Enzo model from Hot Wheels.
For those who are passionate about large trucks, the auction also offers a selection of commercial vehicles. From tankers to trucks and even a collection of 12 fire engines — there’s something for everyone here, no matter how specific your die-cast vehicle mania is.
