Parking Attendant Saved Three Premium Cars from Theft, While McLaren Crashed Itself

Attempted Theft of Luxury Cars in Manhattan Ends in Failure

A group of thieves attempted to steal four luxury cars from a garage in Manhattan, but their plan was thwarted thanks to the quick reaction of a parking attendant and their own poor driving skills.

How the Robbery Unfolded

Early Sunday morning, four or five suspects broke into a garage on West 43rd Street near 11th Avenue. They targeted very expensive cars: a McLaren Artura, a Mercedes-AMG G63, a white Land Rover Range Rover Sport, and, for unclear reasons, a Volvo XC60. However, only one car managed to leave the garage, and even that escape was short-lived.

Intervention by the Parking Attendant

According to the New York Police Department, officers arrived at the scene around 5:48 a.m. following a report of car theft. The suspects, according to the investigation, broke into the garage, got into several cars, and attempted to drive away. It was then that the parking attendant intervened. He quickly lowered the garage’s protective gate right onto the hood of the Range Rover Sport, pinning it in place. This ended the theft attempt for most of the thieves, except for the driver of the McLaren.

Failed Getaway in a Supercar

The getaway in the McLaren Artura was unsuccessful. The thief driving the blue supercar traveled only about one block before losing control and crashing into a pole at the intersection of West 42nd Street and 11th Avenue. Photos from the scene show the car with significant front-end damage and deployed airbags. Considering the Artura has 671 horsepower, the thief seems to have learned firsthand that stealing a mid-engine hybrid supercar and skillfully driving it are two different things.

Aftermath and Investigation

The suspects ultimately abandoned the damaged cars and fled in a gray BMW. As of Tuesday, no arrests have been made, and the NYPD investigation is ongoing. This incident once again demonstrates how crucial the vigilance of staff and proper security measures can be in preventing crimes, even when perpetrators target high-value property. Similar attempts ending in crashes often draw attention to the problem of professional theft rings specializing in luxury cars, as well as the vulnerability of some parking facilities.
