The First Recall of the 2027 Telluride Happened Before Most Buyyrs Even Saw It

First Problems of New Kia Models

New models from Kia, the three-row 2027 Telluride crossover and the 2026 K4 sedan, have already been recalled due to seat belt issues. The vehicles have defective seat belt buckles on the rear seats that may not latch properly.

Scale of the Problem

A total of 14,870 vehicles are affected by the recall, of which 13,499 are Tellurides. The issue concerns the center seat belt buckle in the third row of the crossover and the similar buckle on the rear seat in the sedan.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that Kia first learned about the problem in February after their Georgia plant discovered issues with the latching of the third-row center seat belt buckle.

Source of the Defect and Manufacturer’s Response

The plant then informed its North American Safety Office that some buckles may have been incorrectly assembled by the supplier Samsong Mexico. Since similar buckles from the same supplier were used on the 2026 K4, the company decided to recall both models. Fortunately, the company reports no incidents or injuries related to this defect.

Fault Rectification Process

To address the issue, dealers will inspect and replace the seat belt buckle assembly if necessary. Technicians will disassemble the buckle to ensure the spring plate is correctly positioned relative to the anchor point. If it is not, it will be replaced.

Temporary Sales Halt

Although the inspection and replacement seem fairly straightforward, a stop-sale has been placed on the Telluride and K4. This is far from an ideal situation, considering the crossover is brand new and its sales last month increased by 37.5%, reaching 13,198 units.

However, this is only a temporary obstacle, as dealers only need to check the third-row center seat belt buckle. If everything is fine, they will be able to deliver the vehicle to the buyer. Such preventive recalls early in production are quite common among automakers and often allow for the elimination of potentially dangerous defects before they lead to serious consequences on the road. Kia’s swift response indicates high quality control standards and concern for customer safety, even if it temporarily affects the supply logistics of new, popular models.
