Peugeot Introduces the Electric Hot Hatchback E-208 GTI
At this year’s Le Mans 24 Hours race, Peugeot presented its first electric car with the GTI badge – the E-208 GTI model. This car is equipped with a single electric motor producing 276 hp, which allows it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds. However, a small 54 kWh battery limits the range to 217 miles (350 km).
Peugeot has returned the legendary GTI badge to its lineup after a six-year hiatus, and for the first time, it has appeared on an electric model. Although the regular 208 is available with an internal combustion engine, the company is currently focused on electric vehicles. The E-208 GTI is built on the Stellantis e-CMP platform, which is also used in the Abarth 600e and Alfa Romeo Junior Veloce.
Technical Features and Design
The E-208 GTI has the same powertrain as its ‘relatives’ from Abarth and Alfa Romeo but is slightly faster than them. It also outperforms the electric Mini JCW in acceleration, although it falls short of its top speed. The car’s design is inspired by the classic 205 GTI model: red accents, sport seats with stripes, and 18-inch wheels with a retro-style reference.
“A suspension lowered by 30 mm and a widened track give the E-208 GTI an aggressive look that was characteristic of the legendary 205 GTI”
The interior is also dominated by red elements: ambient lighting, seat stitching, floor mats, and seatbelts. The car has received an upgraded braking system, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 sport tires, and retuned steering.
The E-208 GTI is expected to go on sale by the end of the year at a price of around £36,000. The question remains whether this model can repeat the success of its predecessors and become a new icon in the segment. Given the technical specifications and design, it has a chance.
