The First Commercial Van from Volvo Looks Familiar, Because It Is

New Commercial Variant

The EX30 is the smallest crossover in Volvo’s lineup, but that didn’t stop the brand from creating a work vehicle based on it. Introducing the Volvo EX30 Cargo — a modification developed by the company’s British division, positioned as a compact and very fast way to move around the city with cargo.

Exterior and Practicality

From the outside, Volvo’s first commercial vehicle looks like a regular EX30, if you ignore the completely black rear windows. Volvo will even offer it in Cross Country guise, which will add a more rugged look and slightly higher ground clearance for those wanting to stand out during deliveries.

However, opening the rear doors reveals that this is essentially a two-seat van hidden within the body of a small crossover. The rear seats have been completely removed, increasing cargo volume from 318 liters in the passenger version to a much more useful 1000 liters.

Design Features

To make the vehicle truly practical, Volvo added a partition to separate the cargo compartment, combined with a flat floor and more durable interior trim designed to withstand daily use. The rear doors now open wider, additional task lighting has been added for work in low-visibility conditions, and the underfloor frame provides extra attachment points. The payload capacity is rated at 390 kg.

Technical Specifications and Equipment

Despite its work purpose, the EX30 Cargo retains the performance, safety, and technology of the standard model. The modification is available for new cars and those in stock, making it accessible for the entire lineup.

The base Cargo Core trim is equipped with automatic LED headlights, 18-inch aerodynamic alloy wheels, adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, as well as wireless Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto.

The Cargo Plus trim adds 19-inch wheels, a black roof, heated seats and steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, a wireless charging pad, the Pilot Assist system, and a premium Harman Kardon audio system.

Performance and Availability

In terms of performance, the base electric version offers 148 hp, while the top all-wheel-drive version with two motors delivers 422 hp. The most powerful version accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds, making it an unexpectedly fast way to deliver a small parcel in the UK.

The bad news is that the EX30 Cargo is exclusively available through Volvo’s corporate sales channels in the UK, making it unavailable to private buyers. The price starts from £36,010, which is £2,950 more than the cheapest passenger version. Availability in other markets is not confirmed and currently unlikely.

This Volvo initiative clearly demonstrates the trend of adapting electric vehicles for commercial needs, especially in urban environments. The compact size and high performance of the EX30 could become significant advantages for logistics companies seeking to reduce delivery times and carbon footprint. The restriction of sales to corporate clients only indicates the brand’s strategic focus on developing the B2B segment in the era of electrification.
