First Look at the Mercedes Created to Fix All the Shortcomings of the AMG EQE

First Spy Photos of the Mercedes-AMG E-Class EQ

Automotive spies have managed to photograph the high-performance electric version of the new Mercedes-Benz sedan — the Mercedes-AMG E-Class EQ — for the first time. This model is set to replace the AMG version of the electric EQE on the market, sales of which have been rather modest. The new development features a more traditional and, perhaps, safer design in terms of perception.

Exterior and Design

The photos show that the car has received a fully enclosed radiator grille, the design of which echoes solutions on the electric C-Class and GLC EQ models. A sporty front bumper and front headlights with the characteristic “starry” graphics are also expected in the production version.

AMG alloy wheels are installed on the sides, behind which a high-performance braking system with perforated discs is hidden. The body has streamlined shapes and a classic sedan silhouette. Upon closer inspection, one can notice widened wheel arches, likely indicating an increased track.

The rear of the prototype is currently equipped with a temporary spoiler and mock-up rear lights, but the outline of a sporty diffuser is already visible.

Interior and Technology

Photographers were unable to peek inside, but the E-Class EQ is likely to follow the example of the electric GLC. If so, the cabin could receive a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14-inch multimedia system. The crossover also offers the so-called MBUX Superscreen with an additional 14-inch display for the front passenger. For those who want more, there is the optional MBUX Hyperscreen — a single curved screen measuring 39.1 inches in length across the entire width of the dashboard.

Technical Features and Performance

Details about the powertrain remain a secret for now. It is known that the model will be built on the MB.EA platform and will have much in common with the electric GLC. Rumors suggest that the AMG version of the crossover could receive three axial-flux Yasa motors with a combined output of approximately 939 horsepower.

This may seem excessive, but there is no doubt that the new model will significantly outperform its predecessor, the AMG EQE. Recall that it was equipped with a 90.6 kWh battery and an all-wheel-drive system with two motors producing up to 668 hp and 1000 Nm of torque. This allowed it to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds, however, its real-world range according to EPA estimates was only 220 miles.

The appearance of the Mercedes-AMG E-Class EQ indicates a strategic shift for the German brand in the electric era. Instead of creating separate, radically new models like the EQE, the company appears to be returning to a proven formula by integrating high-performance electric powertrains into familiar and popular body styles, such as the E-Class. This could be the key to better market acceptance, as it combines innovation with an emotional attachment to classic design. The success of this model may determine whether the AMG division will continue to develop separate electric series or integrate them into the main model lineup.
