Peugeot installed a Fiat engine in the sport versions of the 208 and 2008 GT for the Brazilian market

New hybrid engines for Peugeot in Brazil

Peugeot is introducing new hybrid powertrains for its compact models 208 and 2008 in Brazil, using technologies from other brands within the Stellantis group. This allows to reduce costs and adapt the cars to local needs.

Technical features

In Europe, Peugeot’s compact models are sold with a 48V mild-hybrid 1.2-liter engine, but the Brazilian market demands a different approach. Here, the ability to use ethanol fuel is important, so Peugeot has installed the T200 engine from Fiat, which is combined with 12V mild-hybrid technology.

This setup includes a turbocharged 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine, an electric motor-generator, and a 12V lithium-ion battery. It can run on gasoline or ethanol, delivering up to 128 hp of power and 200 Nm of torque. Power is transmitted to the front wheels through a CVT automatic transmission.

According to Stellantis, mild-hybridization allows to reduce fuel consumption by 10% and CO2 emissions by 8% in urban cycle. A similar bio-hybrid system has been used on the Fiat Pulse and Fastback crossovers since last year.

Design and equipment

In Brazil, the GT versions of the 208 and 2008 models receive not only a new power unit, but also a number of visual differences. The hatchback has a larger rear spoiler and mirrors with glossy black finish, while the SUV gets two-tone paint and a standard panoramic sunroof. Both models are equipped with 17-inch alloy wheels, have GT badges, and the inscription “Hybrid Turbo 200” on the rear doors.

In the GT version’s interior, there are leather steering wheel with contrast stitching, aluminum sport pedals, and carbon-like trim. The standard equipment includes a 10-inch digital instrument panel with 3D graphics displaying information about the hybrid system, a 10.3-inch infotainment screen, and a set of ADAS systems.

Prices and availability

The new versions are already available for order in Brazil. The Peugeot 208 GT costs R$126,990 (approximately $23,400), and the 2008 GT – R$162,990 (approximately $30,100). Considering the specificity of the bio-hybrid power unit, it is unlikely that these models will be offered outside South America.

Peugeot engine with Fiat hybrid technology

This step demonstrates how global automakers adapt their products to regional requirements, using shared resources within corporations. The use of ethanol as fuel is particularly relevant for Brazil, where it is widely produced from sugarcane, making it an economically advantageous and environmentally less harmful option. This strategy allows Peugeot to maintain competitiveness in the local market without developing completely new technologies from scratch.
